Queridos Amigos,
In our last update, we described what Devcon is and talked about our renewed focus on growing the Ethereum ecosystem. Part of that goal is to ensure that, for all types of attendees, the next Devcon is everything we dream of and more. For more details on these goals and beyond, please read the full article here! Today we’ll cover site selection and timing, as well as what lies ahead for this year and beyond.
🥁 Our Selection 🥁
To cut to the chase, we are excited and proud to announce that the next edition of Devcon will take place in Bogota, Colombia at the beautiful Agora Bogotá Convention Center in 2021!
The city
We can’t wait for the entire ecosystem to meet Bogota; the capital of Colombia and one of the liveliest and most popular cities in South America. Full of culture, art, history, flavors, opportunities and unique experiences, Bogotá is the perfect city to host Devcon and our entire community!
In Colombia you will find a constant and comfortable climate all year round and diverse destinations that suit all tastes; mountains, rivers and stunning cities like Medellín, Cali, Cartagena and of course Bogotá. It’s a rare find and a country with a stable economy and rhythm running through its veins.
The place
Oh, and the location? Agora Bogotá is a newly built, state-of-the-art center that we hope will be, from afarthe best place to host Devcon. Located just minutes from Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport and the Colombian capital’s historic Santa Fe and Candelaria districts, Agora presented us with a conveniently located and fully modern conference center built to handle catering, WiFi and meeting spaces. and other needs of an event like Devcon.
The process
The Ethereum ecosystem’s preference clearly aligned with strong demand for an event in South America and much-deserved demand for a venue capable of hosting and serving this large and growing gathering.
The search for Devcon 6 sites began before Devcon 5, with the understanding that more time would lead to a smoother experience for all participants. After listening to community feedback and thoroughly examining options and numerous factors in more than 10 cities, we are confident that in Bogota we have found both a region and a location capable of achieving all the goals set for this year’s Devcon. Additionally, we found serious potential to increase a meaningful community presence.
⏱ When, when and what between now and then? ⏱
So here is the plan:
1. Do it right
This year has been challenging for all of us, and we are as excited as many of you to come together, but we also need to make sure the event is well-organized by everyone in this community.
This means going bigger, and of course better than ever. We spent time making sure we could come together and grow our global ecosystem and that of a region new to much of the Ethereum community, and that’s what we’re going to do.
Simply put, Devcon participation should neither be limited to a few willing travelers nor depend on promising changes in collection limits. But our planning is underway, so we’ll meet again with confidence later next year while the drumbeat gets a little louderand a firm date will be announced soon.
So, what awaits us in 2020? The correct answer is often the most obvious: Decentralize.
2. Decentralize 2020
We are proud to announce that, while our The Devcon team remains firmly focused on delivering dc⟠vi in 2021, *EF’s broader mission to continue supporting ecosystem activities will also move forward: we’re already hearing about big events on the way to this falland we will support the many community members who are now stepping up.
Want to host something in your community, region, or online? Let us know here and our team will contact you to find out more.
We will help promote and potentially coordinate these efforts into something as unique as the times we live in. In short, we hope we can all come together as different teams, regions, offices, and Ethereum users for a series of global, independent events this fall.
3. No half measures
Let’s be frank: we will not just serve the the least bad contingency or replacement option for the community and call it “Devcon” when we have just committed to doing it right.
Containment measures are being lifted for the first time in many regions, but it will still be some time before local leaders lift travel restrictions to the extent necessary for a large-scale event with international participation like Devcon. We’ve also considered what’s best for the many speakers, volunteers, and attendees who deserve confident decision-making before preparing for long trips.
So, rather than asking you all to continue to wait with bated breath or delay your plans for a few months, we will extend our deadlines and intensify our ongoing efforts around Devcon 6 in 2021. This can be done by staying TRUE. to the roots of Ethereum with ecosystem-focused events in 2020, and without settling for just a virtual event by default.
Devcon means something to many people and in many unique ways, and we are thrilled to bring the event to South America for the first time. This event means many things to the many types of participants who come together to attend.
It’s a homecoming for many active participants in the Ethereum world. This is a big stage on which to showcase the latest groundbreaking ideas and achievements for the builders who make Ethereum what it is and what it will become. And for all of us, Devcon is an opportunity to attract new faces, new places and entire communities.
In Bogotá, we have already encountered many people and groups eager to meet more of the Ethereum community and welcome Devcon for the first time. The elements are in place to achieve an important community growth and support goal set for Devcon. From builders to educational institutions, local business leaders, policymakers and more, we are already meeting and working with the people of Bogotá, Colombia and South America to help them use in real world Ethereum technology and advancing it.
Devcon Week is more than just one event, but a diverse collection of meetups, sub-conferences and more that showcase the best of our ecosystem. Next year we look forward to adding local flair, integration with other events, local businesses and more.
More to come
With this additional time, we’re excited to build bigger and better than ever, reveal simpler processes for participants, and see much greater integration with the local community.
In future articles, we’ll talk more about the event date, the city and our recommendations for your stay and travel, our support for other 2020 events, the EF Scholars program and much more. Until then, stay informed Devcon.org read more, stay safe, and thank you for your patience as we work to find the best path forward. See you soon !
