A violent crime in the city of Jeju, South Korea, highlighted the dangers of cryptocurrency transactions carried out in unregulated contexts. A Chinese in their thirties was found dead in a luxury hotel room on February 24 after having undergone several injuries by stab.
The authorities believe that murder was linked to a cryptographic transaction that went wrong.
Four orders after a deadly hotel attack
According to a report by the Korean news agency, the Chosun Daily, the victim went to the hotel to conclude an agreement involving the digital currency, but was rather attacked and deprived of 85 million won, which is worth around $ 63,000 in cash.
Following an investigation, the Jeju West police station arrested four Chinese nationals suspected of participation in the crime. Among them are two men, one in the thirties and another in sixties, as well as two women in the thirties. The case was revealed when a knowledge of the victim was unable to reach him and alerted the police at 5:10 p.m. on the day of the incident.
Upon their arrival, the police discovered the victim who died on the scene. One of the suspects then went to the Seogwipo police, while the other three were apprehended separately – one at the airport and another in a cassino hotel.
The authorities are now working to determine the exact reason behind the crime and the circumstances leading to the deadly meeting. The incident has raised concerns about attack growth against cryptographic investors.
Growing attacks against cryptographic investors
The co-founder archives of Casa Platform Jameson Lopp indicate that around 10 physical attacks targeting Bitcoin holders have occurred in the world this year only. Its record highlights an alarming trend in increasing violence against people with bitcoin and other cryptographic assets, although it does not capture all incidents, because many are not reported.
The co-founder of Ledger, David Balland and his wife, were kidnapped on January 21 and taken to an unknown place, where the kidnappers demanded a cryptocurrency ransom. A police operation led to their rescue safely three days later.
