The need to build and launch an ecosystem on the day of Genesis
Imagine if Microsoft released the Xbox and there were no games.
The day the Ethereum Genesis block is created, many elements of the ecosystem – the basic infrastructure, the mining network, the user application browser and the applications – will be in place. Admittedly, there will be a huge amount of development to do beyond Genesis to transform Ethereum into a sophisticated and decentralized consensus application platform. But on the first day, there will be “launch titles”.
Originally, when the idea behind Ethereum was designed in November, the intention was that it was a simple “altcoin” (in fact, a meta-protein in addition to primecoin) with an integrated script language. and the decentralized web (Web3.0). At the time of creating the Ethereum network, the following elements in the etherbrowser and the ecosystem will be operational:
- A fully functional implementation of Ethereum blockchain which improves Bitcoin technology with one -minute blocking times and stronger safety (Ghost protocol), what decentralized applications (“ðApps”) can use for everything that requires consensus (for example, currency and tokens systems, name registers, proof of existence, etc., …)
- A fully functional peer-to-peer protocol, which ðApp can use to send messages between users. For example, a decentralized ðApp messaging will use this protocol for sending real messages, but the blockchain for recording user accounts.
- An elegant user interface, a browser and an application store for the use of ðApps
- Network nodes (minors) that deal with transactions and calculations, secure the network via a consensual process and are offset by the costs and issuance of a new ether
- A standard set of “integrated” ðApps at the level of public services: distributed portfolio, distributed identification system, distributed reputation system, distributed messaging system, distributed name register service, distributed application of distributed applications, etc.
- A standard set of integrated tools for the developer and the end user: Blockchain Explorer, contract explorer, transaction manufacturer, encryption tool, signature tool, authentication tool,…. And a debugger will be available for the hard core.
And shortly after genesis, we hope to see a rich set of applications distributed by third parties, for example, distributed storage services, distributed notary services, distributed exchange services, distributed spreading reputation systems, games, entertainment games, reputation services for useful purposes, reputation services for work will be able to make a lower use, will be able to use the way lower than how in the way of products. like identification and reputation systems.
Without operational distributed applications, Ethereum is a hollow shell. In order to have a wide offer of distributed requests on the first day, non-profit and well-being elements must be built jointly with commercially motivated applications on the competitive markets. From this requirement, Ethereum takes his double mandate.
It can be said that certain elements within an ecosystem must be developed for the common good and do not benefit from a reason for profit. Some other elements are better developed in a competitive profit for profit. For example, it is logical to develop a coherent, large -scale and systematized road system for public good, using public taxes. But it is probably not logical to build cars with public taxes, because development under the pressures of competition in the free market forces the design and production of better products and benefits the market as a whole.
Double mandate: collaborative and lucrative collaborative development
Two Hub organizations will direct the Ethereum project under double mandate: a for -profit entity based in Zug, Switzerland, and a non -profit organization, based in Toronto, Canada. These two organizations will be built in a way that will allow everyone to remain strong and financially independent to guarantee years of development and growth of the ecosystem.
The Ethereum ecosystem will initially be built by non -profit and lucrative entities in partnership, ideally with a large participation of many other independent entities. The founding leadership will set up a mechanism which guarantees that the fundamental elements of the ecosystem are constructed and maintained in a manner which adheres to the founding principles. Funding and independence will be guaranteed to organizations (companies registered by the State or possibly the companies registered on blockchain) which guide the various development paths of the central infrastructure.
At the same time, human economies largely concern the free market trade (or should be), so that the non -profit organization, to a certain extent – and in particular the for -profit entity – will help independent commercial efforts in space to launch and flourish. This assistance can take a variety of forms, to provide resources and advice, to maintain support channels, to create joint ventures.
The hybrid organizational model
“Mozilla is one of these (hybrid organizations for non -profit / for profit) and, looking around, I see others.
“… the more I dig, the more I am convinced that organizations like Mozilla, Wikipedia, Kiva, Miro and so on this mission, the market and the web culture represent a new model.
“Mission + Market + Web Hybrids is important because they can exercise the necessary power to move the markets on a global scale, while looking for the little guy, taking the long opinion and remaining faithful to their mission of public profit. They show us how organizations can – and perhaps should work in the future.”
- Mark Surman, Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation
Trolltech / Digia (QT), WordPress, Red Hat, Google Android and the Open Handsed Alliance, the Mozilla organization and several others were the pioneers of the double mandate approach and built prosperous ecosystems and prosperous companies. The model that Sun developed in the late 90s is also instructive.
Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) has developed Java computer language and internal libraries. As innovative as it was, it is likely that it would not have acquired such a large market share, if the sun had not realized that they, as a profit -by -purpose company, could not control a fundamental aspect of the development of software as, and many of its competitors, should use. To respond to this conflict of interest, Sun opened Java and developed the Java community process for the growth of the platform of the platform in a non-partisan manner.
Ethereum is an open source project and will remain open source. And the Ethereum project, under the auspices of its non -profit foundation, will create a process of community development philosophically similar to the Java community process. In fact, Ethereum, so far, has been developed in a less formalized community development process.
The non -profit Ethereum entity will specify and guide the development of the basic Ethereum infrastructure. He will use a non-partisan community development process and develop, lead and support research initiatives in the general cryptocurrency space. The non -profit organization will have a subscription composed at the origin of the founders of Ethereum, and will soon add other independent leaders in the emerging space.
The for -profit Ethereum entity will be responsible for developing certain elements of the basic infrastructure in collaboration with the non -profit entity and the construction of the ecosystem with application services and distributed companies that it develops, funds or supports otherwise.
We think it is the most effective short -term structure. That said, we are Taoists (where Dao means distributed autonomous organization). We will seek to move so many infrastructure and governance as soon as possible on the blockchain. Our OpenSalary system will probably be the first component to move to the blockchain. Please listen to more information on the subjects of the opening and dification of the two organizations. Our goal, if we do our job properly, is to get away from (recorded) business.
