The ZKSYNC association has managed to recover for $ 5 million from tokens stolen following a security violation on April 15, involving its airliner distribution contract.
The pirate behind the feat agreed with a 10% bonus in exchange for the return of 90% of stolen assets, transferring nearly $ 5.7 million to the ZKSYNC Security Council on three transactions on April 23.
In a press release published on X, the ZKSYNC association confirmed cooperation, noting that the funds were returned to the designated window of 72 hours of refuge.
Matter Labs confirms that no user funds have been assigned to the ZKSYNC security incident
Matter Labs, the developer of the ZKSYNC protocol, also shared the update, reassuring users that no personal funds were compromised during the incident.
Blockchain data shows that the hacker transferred $ 2.47 million to ZK tokens and $ 1.83 million ether (ETH) on the ZKSYNC era network, as well as an additional 776 ETH – estimated nearly $ 1.4 million – at Ethereum of the Security Council. The transfers were completed in less than 15 minutes.
The violation occurred when the attacker had access to the administration account of Zksync and operated the air contract Sweepunclamed () Function, striking 111 million ZK tokens not claimed worth around 5 million dollars at the time.
The feat took place during the decrease in Zksync of 17.5% of its token supply to the participants to the ecosystem.
Interestingly, the amount recovered has exceeded the original stolen value due to an increase in chip prices from hacking.
According to Coingecko, the ZK tokens won 16.6% and the ETH increased by 8.8% since April 15.
Despite the positive resolution, the ZK market response was silent, the token drop by 0.2% in the last 24 hours.
The ZKSYNC association has announced its intention to publish a detailed report on the incident.
The ZKSYNC era, an Ethereum Layer 2 network taking advantage of zero knowledge rollers, currently holds nearly $ 59 million in total locked value (TVL) and more than $ 2 billion in tokenized active assets, based on Defillama and Rwa.xyz data.
Crypto lost $ 1.6 billion against pirates in the first quarter
In the first three months of 2025, the cryptography ecosystem lost $ 1,635,933,800 in 39 incidents, according to the Immunefi blockchain safety platform.
The report says: “The first quarter of 2025 marks the worst quarter for hacks in the history of the cryptography ecosystem”.
Most of this is the result of only two hacks of two centralized exchanges. Phemex suffered a loss of $ 69.1 million in January, while Bebit lost $ 1.46 billion in February.
Subsequently, the total number of losses in the first quarter marked an increase of 4.7x compared to the first quarter of 2024. At that time, pirates and fraudsters stole $ 348,251,217.
In particular, experts assume that the infamous North Korean group Lazarus is the source of the two largest attacks. They stole $ 1.52 billion, or 94% of total losses.
