Top Crypto Wallets Launch Real-Time Phishing Defense Network

Leading Wallets Unite Against Phishing Threats

MetaMask, Phantom, WalletConnect and Backpack have partnered with the Security Alliance (SEAL) to create a real-time phishing defense network. This collaboration aims to build what SEAL calls a “decentralized immune system” for cryptographic security. The idea is quite simple: when a user identifies a phishing attempt, this information is shared almost instantly between all participating wallets.

I think this approach makes sense as phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated. We’re not just talking about poorly written emails anymore. These are complex operations that can fool even experienced crypto users.

How the defense system works

SEAL’s Verifiable Phishing Reports technology is at the heart of this initiative. It allows users to submit cryptographically verified evidence of malicious websites. The system then automatically validates and shares these reports across the network. What’s interesting is that it is based on the exact content users encounter, which adds a layer of credibility to the reports.

Ohm Shah, a security researcher at MetaMask, described the situation as a “constant game of cat and mouse.” He noted that working with SEAL allows portfolio teams to be more agile in their response to emerging threats. The goal is to effectively disrupt the infrastructure that drainers depend on.

The Growing Threat of Crypto Drainers

This defense network is a direct response to the growing wave of crypto drainers like Inferno Drainer, Angel Drainer, and Ace Drainer. These are not simple scams: they are sophisticated toolkits that bad actors can purchase and deploy without much technical knowledge.

Drainers are essentially malicious scripts designed to quietly siphon crypto assets from users’ wallets. They have been responsible for millions of losses over the years. What makes them particularly dangerous is their ability to constantly evolve and adapt to circumvent security measures.

For example, Blockaid discovered an updated version called AngelX that appeared after the original Angel Drainer was discontinued. This constant evolution makes traditional security approaches less effective over time.

Looking to the future

The partnership expects the new system to provide “faster response times” to detect and neutralize phishing threats. By creating this decentralized network, they hope that the discovery of a single person can protect the entire community.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t just about technology, it’s also about changing how security works in the crypto space. Instead of each wallet provider fighting threats independently, they pool their resources and intelligence. This collective approach may well be necessary to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated attackers.

Of course, no security system is perfect, and bad actors will continue to adapt. But this coordinated effort represents a significant step forward in protecting everyday crypto users from phishing attacks.
