The future of blockchain in Bolivia: will it bring financial inclusion and stability?

Bolivia is preparing for a new era of governance. Rodrigo Paz, the newly elected president, is pushing a technology agenda. His vision? Using blockchain technology to build a more transparent and less corrupt government. Looks good, right? But is it too good to be true?

Bolivia is exploring blockchain solutions to fight corruption and improve financial inclusion. The hope is that by using smart contracts and a crypto payment platform, they can strengthen economic sovereignty. But will it really work?

Smart contracts and their promise

Smart contracts are coded agreements that execute automatically when conditions are met. Imagine a bidding process that runs on its own, leaving no room for human error or greed. This is the idea with which Bolivia is evolving. The goal? Create a procurement system as clear as day and as strong as the code it runs on.

But there is a catch. We have seen how technology can sometimes exacerbate inequalities. Will everyone in Bolivia really benefit from these blockchain solutions? Or will it just be another tool for the elite?

Cryptographic payments: access for all?

The proposed crypto payment platform aims to include those who have been left behind by traditional banking services. By allowing citizens to declare their crypto assets, the government hopes to create a new fund for foreign exchange stabilization. More liquidity, less dependence on the US dollar. Sounds promising, right?

I’m not so sure. Access to the crypto payment platform may be limited to those who already have some financial knowledge. What about unbanked people? Will they be able to participate in this new system?

Regulatory frameworks: a balance

For this to work, Bolivia needs a regulatory framework that promotes innovation while protecting consumers. This is a delicate balance that many countries have struggled to achieve. Will Bolivia manage to achieve this?

This is a tall order and I’m not convinced it will be easy. The government must create regulations that encourage the use of blockchain while aligning with national economic goals.

Economic sovereignty: a double-edged sword

Reducing dependence on the dollar could be a game-changer for Bolivia. But will this lead to real economic stability? Tokenizing assets and using stablecoins could help, but we have seen how digital assets can also lead to instability.

It’s a complicated picture. As Bolivia embarks on this blockchain adventure, it could serve as an example for other emerging economies. Or it could end up being a cautionary tale. Only time will tell.
