According to blockchain investigator ZachXBT, several Trust Wallet users experienced unauthorized fund withdrawals over the past few hours as assets were drained from their addresses without approval, with more than $7 million drained.

However, the occurrence and timing of the incident has raised concerns as it follows a recent update to Trust Wallet’s Chrome extension released on December 24.

The data shows a massive number of transfers between affected wallets, with a peak of activity concentrated within hours of the updates being deployed.

According to Trust Wallet, the incident only affected version 2.68 of the browser extension and advised users to disable it and upgrade to version 2.69 immediately.

However, mobile-only users and all other extension versions are not affected.

We have identified a security incident only affecting version 2.68 of Trust Wallet Browser Extension. Users with browser extension 2.68 should disable it and upgrade to version 2.69.

The hack primarily targeted BTC, ETH, BNB, and USDC, with funds transferred immediately in each reported case and reported activity showing no gradual or staged withdrawals.

ZachXBT identified several addresses linked to the reported thefts, including 0x3b09A3c9aDD7D0262e6E9724D7e823Cd767a0c74, 0x463452C356322D463B84891eBDa33DAED274cB40, and 0xa42297ff42a3b65091967945131cd1db962afae4.

These addresses received funds from several affected wallets.

Incident triggers immediate concern in crypto community

In this context, the Trust Wallet report has raised serious concerns in the crypto space, as the timeline is characterized by transaction data, with the focus still being on the recent Chrome extension update.

Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao confirmed that Trust Wallet would cover lost funds, with assurances that the team is still investigating how hackers were able to submit a new version.

So far, $7 million has been affected by this hack. @TrustWallet will cover. User funds are SAFU. Thank you for your understanding of any inconvenience caused. 🙏

The team is still investigating how hackers were able to submit a new version.

Those who suspect a compromise are advised to move the remaining funds to new wallets created from new seed phrases.
