Decentralized computing has a usability problem. This slows down the entire sector. Everyone knows the GPU shortage is real. The demand for AI is exploding. Centralized cloud providers like AWS and GCP charge extra for this. And there’s a mountain of unused GPU capacity in the world doing nothing.
The obvious solution is a decentralized IT marketplace. The problem ? Most of these solutions are painful to use. Developers don’t want to manage SSH keys. They don’t want to have to fight with unreliable nodes. They want to write code and perform tasks. And many of us who try AI don’t even know what SSH keys are. Ocean Network has just launched the beta version of its peer-to-peer decentralized computing orchestration layer. It is built specifically to fill this gap.
Before we get into what he does, a little background on Ocean’s origin.
Ocean Network and The Alliance
Ocean Protocol joined the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance in March 2024, merging with Fetch.ai and SingularityNET under a single token. As of July 2024, approximately 81% of the total OCEAN supply has been traded. But around 270 million OCEAN tokens, held by more than 37,000 wallets, remain unconverted. The alliance eventually collapsed. Ocean’s focus has always been decentralized AI infrastructure. Fetch and Singularity were building autonomous AI agents. Different missions. Different priorities. The split was inevitable. Ocean is now completely independent and the profits from its derivative technologies are intended for OCEAN buyouts and burning.
Now let’s talk about what they’re actually building.
The orchestration layer is the product
Ocean Network solves what it calls the “coordination problem” of decentralized computing. Massive idle GPU capacity exists worldwide. There are also data scientists who need it. No one has found an easy way to connect them.
Until now. You don’t touch the infrastructure. You choose your materials, submit your work and get results. It’s the whole experience.
The Ocean Orchestrator integrates natively into VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and Antigravity. This is where developers already live. The workflow has three steps. Filter and select specific hardware like Nvidia H200s or Tesla 4s. Set your minimum CPU and RAM requirements. Deploy a containerized Python or JavaScript job with a single click. The results automatically return to your local environment.
Traditional cloud providers offer rigid, pre-bundled hardware tiers. Ocean Network offers complete flexibility with no predefined plans. You define the exact specifications you need. You pay for exactly what the job uses. Nothing more.

Pay as you go, not pay for inactivity
This is where it gets interesting. Especially if you’ve ever looked at your AWS bill and felt sick.
Traditional cloud providers charge for the time a machine is “ON”. It doesn’t matter if it’s an active or inactive calculation. Reserved instances. Minimum commitments. Hours of inactivity you’ll never come back from.
Ocean Network uses a pay-as-you-go deposit mechanism deployed on the Ethereum L2 base. The funds are blocked. They are only published after the node has completed the work and returned the output. You pay for time, material and the environment. Nothing else. Wallet-based identity through Alchemy manages access and tracking of rewards.
Think of it like renting a car by the mile you drive. Not for the day.
It’s a real change.
Data privacy is built in
For data scientists dealing with sensitive data, Ocean uses Compute-to-Data, or C2D. Your algorithm runs in an isolated container where the data resides. Raw data never disappears. Only secure calculation outputs are yours.
A big deal for anyone working in healthcare, finance, or any other industry where pushing your dataset to a third-party cloud isn’t an option.
Hardware is real from day one
This is a good question to ask about any decentralized computing network. Is the material really there?
For Ocean Network, yes. Ocean Network leases high-performance GPUs from Aethir, a leader in decentralized cloud computing with over 400,000 GPU containers available in 95 countries. This gives users immediate access to high-end NVIDIA H200s at competitive prices. No need to wait for the network of nodes to grow organically.
To celebrate the beta launch, Ocean Network is offering $100 in free compute credits to early adopters. Claim them on the Ocean Network dashboard and start running real AI workloads on high-end hardware today.
What comes next for Ocean Network
The beta version focuses on demand. Get developers and data scientists to execute tasks. Node operators come next. Anyone with idle GPU capacity will be able to set up an Ocean Node and monetize it through the network.
The long-term situation is that of a liquid IT market. Idle GPUs become revenue-generating assets. Data scientists benefit from flexible, affordable access to the hardware they need. No locking. No inflated cloud bills.
Supported workloads include integration, model inference, data cleaning, batch processing, and fine-tuning.
The beta version is open worldwide. Check out the full documentation at docs.oncompute.ai and the Ocean Network website to get started.
