Bitcoin Pizza Day 2026: Why This Billion-Dollar Lesson Matters for Every New Investor

On May 22, 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 BTC for two pizzas worth around $41. Today, those same coins are valued at approximately $773 million, as Bitcoin Pizza Day marks its 16th anniversary.

The question this anniversary raises is not whether Laszlo made a mistake. The real question is what holding this asset for the next 16 years could do for you.

16 years ago today, Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 Bitcoins for two Papa John’s pizzas.

Bitcoin Pizza Day 2026 comes as the crypto market is in a slight slump, with BTC slowly losing gains made over the past month, falling to $77,200 after rallying to over $82,500 just 10 days ago.

The broader crypto market is relatively stable on the day, with a modest gain of +0.3% over the past 24 hours, and the total crypto market cap stands at $2.65 trillion, up from $2.9 trillion just a week ago.

$BTC still holding above the $75,000-$76,000 support zone.

What is Bitcoin Pizza Day and why is it still important in 2026?

The story begins with Laszlo Hanyecz, a developer who offered 10,000 BTC on a forum for two large pizzas. An 18-year-old user named Jeremy Sturdivant, known as “jercos,” took up the offer, ordering two pizzas from Papa John’s and receiving the Bitcoin in return.

At that time, Bitcoin was relatively new, lacking a reliable exchange rate or merchant support, making trading feel more like a strange experience.

What makes this story meaningful is not regret; Hanyecz called the deal “incredibly cool,” but the impact that followed. It only took 2.5 years for Bitcoin to surpass the price of a $20 pizza, and today, 1 BTC can buy over 3,800 pizzas.

At Bitcoin’s peak in October 2025, this figure reached 6,236 pizzas. The 10,000 BTC Hanyecz used on a $41 meal is now worth more than most people earn in their lifetime, reflecting the rise of Bitcoin as a strategic asset, a topic revisited every May 22.

What lessons can we learn from Laszlo?

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day 🙌

The reason Laszlo’s 10,000 BTC became so valuable was because of Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million, hardcoded into the protocol. This limited supply, combined with growing demand, from cypherpunk forums to institutional investments, creates a scarcity similar to that of gold, but with mathematical and verifiable validation.

On Bitcoin Pizza Day, many are missing the lesson: It’s not about avoiding crypto spending or claiming Laszlo was stupid. He was testing a new payment system using tokens with no established value. The real takeaway for investors is to have a clear, written reason for buying Bitcoin today. Without this clarity, investment decisions can be emotionally driven, leading to impulsive selling during market downturns.

Successful investors, like MicroStrategy, maintain a disciplined approach to volatility by documenting their beliefs about supply and demand and knowing what would cause them to adjust their views. This strategy helps avoid panic selling in difficult market conditions.

Bitcoin Pizza Day 2026: What Every New Investor Should Keep in Mind

Market capitalization

Sixteen years ago, Bitcoin was just an experiment; today, it is a viable asset in ETFs and corporate portfolios, with its price rising from $0.004 to over $77,000.

For those entering the crypto market in 2026, the 16th anniversary of Bitcoin Pizza Day serves as an important reminder: before you buy Bitcoin, state your thesis. Consider Bitcoin’s fixed supply over the next decade, the impact of institutional adoption, and your investment horizon. This written framework will transform speculation into informed investment.

Although Bitcoin’s scarcity is structural, historical price growth does not guarantee future performance. It is therefore crucial to understand why you own Bitcoin and to stick to your long-term beliefs, despite short-term fluctuations. The lesson from the early days of Bitcoin is clear: know your investment and stay focused on your thesis.
