What you can do with futures
Spot trading moves in one direction: buy, hold, sell. Futures add the other half of the market. With perpetual futures contracts, you can:
- Be long or short. Position yourself for moves in both directions, not just when markets rise.
- Cover your assets. Offset the cash assets you own when the market turns, without selling them.
- Trade with leverage. Open a larger position with up to 10xsized as you wish.
- Store without expiration. Perpetual futures contracts never settle, so you can hold a view for as long as it lasts, through 300+ pairs.
For example, let’s say Bitcoin is falling but you expect it to recover, while Ethereum looks stronger in the short term. Rather than selling your Bitcoin to chase Ethereum, you can go long Ethereum on a perpetual future for a fraction of the capital and leave your Bitcoin position intact.
Why trade futures on Kraken
Wherever you trade, leverage is important. Since July 1, 2026, MiCA has set the standard for operating in Europe, and Kraken was ready well before the deadline.
Kraken has been operational since 2011 and is now MiCA authorized through the Central Bank of Ireland and Under MiFID license for derivatives, the license behind regulated futures. Each asset is backed by independent proof of reserves, as well as a long-standing security history. This is what your first futures trade is based on.
