Zcash’s infrastructure has entered a new phase as the network completes its transition from its original software implementation. This evolution lasted almost a decade, starting with the launch of zcashd in 2016, before the 2024 version of Zebra introduced a Rust-based alternative.
After the 2024 deprecation notice, node operators had ample time to pivot before the planned retirement. On July 18, zcashd reached the end of support at block height 3417100.


Meanwhile, Zakura has completed the new node ecosystem. Rather than simply replacing existing software, the transition strengthens maintainability, prepares the network for Ironwood, and reduces long-term operational risks.
Zcash adoption remains intact
Completing Zcash’s infrastructure transition has not resolved the market’s biggest question. Instead, the focus was on whether users still trusted the network after the Orchard vulnerability. Early activity suggests that trust is largely maintained.
Although protected balances decreased by 14% to 4.42 million ZEC, users continued to rely on private transactions, which increased by 11.1% quarter-on-quarter to 131,584.


This trend became even more significant as the anonymity set for ZCash increased by 325,127 units to 124.08 million.
This indicates an increase in the number of participants using ZCash for privacy purposes. Additionally, average daily trading volume increased 33.8% quarter-on-quarter to $373 million. This further reinforces that overall network usage has increased.
Rather than reflecting weakening adoption, these trends indicate a cautious repositioning of capital while confidence in Zcash’s privacy infrastructure remains intact.
Formal verification strengthens protocol integrity
Even resilient blockchain networks are ultimately judged on how they respond to critical security threats. Zcash faced such a test when researchers discovered a flaw in Orchard’s protected pools that guaranteed around 85% of the protected value.
But the flaw remained contained because the disclosure was coordinated and the developers were able to release an emergency patch within days. More importantly, this flaw allowed counterfeiting inside Orchard rather than inflating ZEC’s total supply.
The turnstile mechanism prevented falsified funds from leaving the pool other than legitimate deposits. Looking ahead, Ironwood strengthens this protection with formal verification and quantum recovery as well.
Together, these upgrades move Zcash from reactive patches to stronger guarantees of long-term security and trust within the ecosystem.
