Last year, after a three-year hiatus, we emerged from the pandemic stronger than before and gathered in Bogota for the biggest and a few would be say“best Devcon yet.” Since then, we often get asked “When is Devcon 7?” Well, today we have some news! 😃 🎉
🥁 When is Devcon 7!? 🥁
We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Devcon 7 is coming to Southeast Asia in 2024! 🎊
Before you ask us if we picked the right years, let’s explain why we scheduled Devcon 7 for 2024. We thought about it a lot. Here’s why:
1) More impact 🌏
One of the most impactful aspects of Devcon VI in Bogotá was the involvement of the thriving Ethereum community in Latin America. Over the course of three years, we had a lot of time to engage with, support, and empower local communities, and to have the greatest impact on a regional Ethereum community.
We want to create the same impact on the road to Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia, giving the burgeoning Ethereum community more time to mature and grow further. We look forward to seeing new local communities grow. 🌱
2) Greater importance 💥
Devcon VI in Bogotá set the bar very high in terms of the number of participants, the quality of the content and updates, and the production itself. Scheduling Devcon 7 in 2024 gives us time and allows us to maintain the level for the following reasons:
- The projects and protocol will have time to move forward and improve, so the speakers will have something truly meaningful to share.
- With more time for production and ideation, we can once again make this a top-notch event.
- A slower pace may make the event more accessible to those who want to attend but don’t want to (or can’t) travel to Devcon every year.
- The longer the wait, the greater the impatience! 😁
3) Adopt subtraction 🤲
This year there are more Ethereum events and communities than ever before all over the world. As mentioned by Aya in his speech About the Ethereum Foundation Subtraction state of mind, we want to subtract so that You can add. This is also true for Ethereum community events, and we want to give local community events the opportunity to grow further. After all, the Ethereum ecosystem is stronger with more diverse participants.
There will be many amazing community events this year that you can attend, speak at, or sponsor in lieu of Devcon. Check out this community list for some of the events happening near you in 2023. In conclusion, we are confident that scheduling Devcon 7 for 2024 will be beneficial due to the increased total impact it will have on each attendee and the community as a whole.
Southeast Asia and Ethereum 🌏
As the main event, Devcon aims to bring everyone together, connect with outside communities, share important messages and updates, and welcome newcomers to Ethereum.
Ethereum is global, and bringing Devcon to Southeast Asia is part of our goal to reach more local Ethereum communities, as well as increase diversity within the overall Ethereum community. The Ethereum community is in many ways still dominated by the West, despite the fact that crypto is more widely used in Southeast Asia. To illustrate this, four Southeast Asian countries ranked in the top 20. Global Cryptocurrency Adoption Indexwith Vietnam and the Philippines at No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Southeast Asia holds huge untapped and ever-growing opportunities, similar to those we have seen in South America.
Thus, Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia provides an opportunity to give a large, new, active and diverse community a platform on the global Ethereum stage.
👉 By the way, we are still evaluating specific locations in Southeast Asia, and the final decision will be based on a number of factors, some as simple as availability of locations. Some communities in Southeast Asia have already submitted excellent proposals (which are still under review!), and we reopen the Forum to give other Southeast Asian communities some extra time to nominate their cities!
The deadline for suggestions is March 15, 2023!
We look forward to exploring the diverse cultures and locations of Southeast Asia, from the bustling streets of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to the beautiful beaches of Bali and Phuket, the majestic mountains of Vietnam, and more.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who submitted suggestions for Devcon 7’s location on the forum. They were very helpful, it was not an easy decision and the suggestions will be useful for years to come, not just for Devcon but for many Ethereum community events.
