Platform is a new team within EF with one goal:
Deliver the strongest Ethereum platform possible, where L1 and L2 are best positioned to support users, applications, and all organizations that rely on Ethereum. This requires improving the L1 <> L2 relationship, so that we can grow as a mutually reinforcing system across each layer.
Since the rollup-centric roadmap was first proposed 5 years ago, an ecosystem of chains has grown around Ethereum L1. The early mental model of rollups has given way to a network of differentiated L2s, each with distinct and valuable economies, extending the core properties of Ethereum to millions of users.
As Ethereum matures, we must do more to provide a cohesive platform that fully leverages the unique capabilities of Ethereum as a system (L1 + L2). This includes improving the value proposition of being an L2, tightening the flywheel so that L2 adoption more broadly generates value for Ethereum, guiding the ecosystem toward more secure and permissionless architectures, and making it easier to navigate for users and institutions adopting Ethereum. It is important to note that part of creating a strong Ethereum involves moving towards technological improvements that strengthen and amplify the most essential and uniquely enabled fundamental properties of Ethereum.
The platform team will evaluate and recognize both the successes and drawbacks of Ethereum as a system. We must be real actors, evaluating the improvements needed, while being aware of the tensions that exist on the path to building fixed systems that stand the test of time.
How this works in Platform
-
Protocol development
- Product-focused R&D to improve the robustness of the ecosystem as a whole
- Integrate ecosystem needs into protocol roadmap and fork planning
- Ensure protocol upgrades translate into real adoption and usage
-
Protocol integration
- Proactive engagement with manufacturers and institutions to provide guidance on protocol, roadmap and technical integrations
-
Strategy and monitoring
- Ensuring positive feedback loops in the L1 + L2 strategy
- Metrics to track network health
- Improve the readability of the Ethereum ecosystem on public dashboards
What this brings to Ethereum
- Clear and shared understanding of L1 and L2 roles
- A protocol and a network that best exploits the strengths of each layer
- L2 adoption strengthens the fundamental properties of Ethereum and ETH, and L1 growth provides a more powerful foundation for L2s.
- Clear and compelling pathways for organizations and institutions to adopt Ethereum
We are excited to launch Platform and accelerate many key initiatives in collaboration with the broader community. Stay tuned for updates and more information.
