Decentralized data storage company Arweave has launched its “Genesis Block” to the moon in collaboration with two other companies.
Arweave (AR), in partnership with Iridia and LifeShup, sent encrypted data and cryptocurrencies to a wallet during a space mission, according to a January 15 press release.
The concept leveraged Iridia’s synthetic DNA-based storage technology and LifeShip’s lunar landing craft to propel Arweave’s data capsule to the moon.
Founded in 2017, Arweave sought to provide cheap, permanent storage for “the world’s knowledge and history,” starting with its Genesis block, said Arweave CEO Sam Williams.

The mission also included sending Artificial Super Intelligence Alliance (FET) tokens to an Iridia molecular wallet. According to the joint statement, the Moon’s stable environment and nanotechnology will preserve data for millennia.
“It’s about safeguarding knowledge and digital assets for generations to come in a way that transcends the boundaries of time, space and even imagination,” said Buck Watia, vice president of products and sales at Iridia.
