Bhutan launches gold-backed digital token on Solana. This move aims to bring real gold into the digital space in a simple and transparent manner.

In this new system, people can hold a gold-backed digital token on Solana that represents real gold stored in Bhutan.

A token called TER

Bhutan’s new token is TER, which means “treasure” in Dzongkha. Real physical gold backs each TER token. It’s not just digital hype; all tokens are actually something valuable. This is what sets TER apart from common cryptocurrencies.

The token runs on the Solana blockchain, which supports high-speed transactions, low fees, and scalability. Bhutan chose Solana because it can support large-scale use and attract international investors.

Launch date and distribution

TER will go live on December 17, 2025. It is available through DK Bank, the first licensed digital financial institution in Bhutan. The bank will serve as a distributor and custodian, acting as an official to verify that the gold backing each token is secure.

The Royal Monetary Authority and the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority are responsible for regulating DK Bank. Such an arrangement implies that the token is subject to a transparent legal framework that protects investors.

Why is Bhutan doing this?

Bhutan wants to connect traditional gold with modern blockchain technology. TER allows anyone, from locals to global investors, to purchase digital gold securely and transparently. Bhutan is building Gelephu Mindfulness City. It is a special economic zone focused on digital finance, innovation and sustainability.

Gold tokenization is one of its first major steps. The government also worked with Matrixdock, an institutional asset tokenization platform under Matrixport. They provide the secure technological foundation that makes TER trustworthy.

Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) announced TER, a gold-backed physical digital token backed by a sovereign.

TER (“Treasure” in Dzongkha) brings Bhutan’s long tradition of safeguarding national wealth into the digital age, by combining trust and efficient cryptography.

– Solana (@solana) December 11, 2025

TER establishes Bhutan as an emerging player in the Real World Assets (RWA) movement. Kyrgyzstan has tokenized its currency or gold reserves, and now Bhutan is following suit. The gold-backed digital token on Solana demonstrates to the world that small countries can be at the forefront of new finance. It is a medium that integrates traditional wisdom and digital performance.

Conclusion

Bhutan’s introduction of a gold-backed digital token on Solana is a planned move towards a contemporary, open and global digital economy. Using TER, Bhutan invites the world to invest in tangible gold via a modern digital format.
