The founder of Cardano, Charles Hoskinson, questioned Ethereum’s ability to remain relevant during the next decade.
During an AMA session of April 23, Hoskinson warned that Ethereum could face a mass migration like its current structural strains under scaling pressures and internal ineffections.
According to him:
“I don’t think Ethereum will survive over ten to fifteen years. The two layers will continue to breastfeed the whole alpha, and people will start to fight, and this will become more and more difficult for Vitalik to be able to maintain it together by the force of the will. And users will gradually migrate to other places. ”
Hoskinon finds faults in Ethereum architecture
He argued that the architecture and governance model of Ethereum create long -term vulnerabilities. The founder of Cardano noted that network users are gradually moving to alternative platforms, especially since layer 2 solutions (L2) are beginning to dominate the activity of the network.
He said:
“They must find a way to ensure that the layer is not parasitic. And unfortunately, I do not see a way on how to do this easily. It will be a very hostile divorce to solve this type of thing.”
Hoskinson has also criticized the fundamental components of Ethereum, including its system of proof of bet, the accounting model and the virtual machine. According to him, many of these problems were avoidable and came from decisions that the Ethereum Foundation took despite the decline in industry.
He added:
“They have the bad accounting model, they have the bad virtual machine, and they have the bad consensual model. All these self-inflicted injuries. People told them not to do it. They did it, and you know, they arrived where they had to go. ”
Despite his severe criticism, Hoskinson welcomed the recent proposal from the co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, to replace the Ethereum virtual machine with RISC-V, an overall architecture of more efficient instructions.
This upgrade aims to optimize the execution layer without disturbing the developer’s experience, keeping solidity and Vyper as the main programming languages.
He described change as positive, but stressed that he thought that technical improvements will not solve the deeper problems of Ethereum. In his opinion, unless the accounting model is redesigned, Ethereum could delay on adaptive networks.
He said:
“I think it is good to go to RISC-V. This is a very good decision to make for Vitalik. It makes sense. But the accounting model must also be a little revised a little.”
