This week, Coinbase revealed new features that could enable AI agents to carry out crypto transactions. In the process, other developers have also shared updates related to AI-based payments.
With many AI tokens ending the week in the green, will this be the tipping point for the growing narrative?
Agent wallets for autonomous AI payments
Coinbase has unveiled Agentic Wallets, a new wallet infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents. The goal is to give AI systems the ability to hold, spend, earn and trade cryptocurrencies on their own, without waiting for human approval at every step.
Today’s AI agents can advise on transactions or identify services they need, but they cannot independently execute payments. With this project, the team says:
“The next generation of agents will not just advise: they will act. »
Built on Coinbase’s infrastructure and powered by the x402 payments protocol (which has already processed over 50 million transactions), the system would enable machine-to-machine crypto payments. This will also facilitate gas-free trading on the basis and programmable financial actions.

Developers can set session caps and transaction limits, while private keys remain secure within Coinbase’s infrastructure. Built-in compliance tools will also automatically filter transactions.

Lightning Labs also announced a new set of tools that would help AI agents transact directly on the Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning Network.
Their update will include support for L402 automatic payments, node operations via MCP, remote key signing for added security, and expanded spending controls.

Meanwhile, activity on Ethereum (ETH) is also ramping up.
In fact, more than 13,000 AI agents registered on the channel in a single day after the launch of ERC-8004. This is the new standard that gives agents portable identities and a built-in layer of trust.
The chips turn green as the narrative gathers momentum
Several major AI tokens ended the week in positive territory, although the largest tokens fell.
Kite (KITE) is up almost 15% over the past seven days, while tokenbot (CLANKER) is up over 15%. Siren (SIREN) gained over 12% and Unibase (UB) rose over 9% weekly.

Now, some tokens remain down on shorter timeframes. However, the broader trend implies that investors could get in early on what could become the next big thing.
Final Thoughts
- Coinbase’s agent wallets and Lightning’s AI payment tools will contribute to crypto AI history this year.
- With 13,000 AI agents registered on Ethereum in a single day, the economy may already be taking shape!
