With the US presidential election less than 35 days away, the crypto industry appears to be hoping for more favorable regulation in the near future.
At Messari’s annual Mainnet conference in New York, Shan Aggarwal, vice president of corporate and business development at Coinbase (COIN) Ventures, a cryptocurrency exchange, discussed the industry’s regulatory uncertainties. “We hope for the best,” he said in an exclusive interview with Quartz.
His remarks underscore the industry’s anticipation that the upcoming election could lead to clearer and more favorable legislation.
“It is difficult to lower the current SEC from here,” Aggarwal said. “(Gary Gensler) has taken a regulation-by-enforcement approach to the entire crypto industry, including Coinbase.”
Aggarwal is scheduled to speak at the conference on Wednesday, where he will discuss Coinbase’s investments, mergers and acquisitions over the years, as well as its future strategic direction.
This year, Coinbase partnered with traditional financial giants such as BlackRock to offer a funds tokenization platform. Commenting on this collaboration, Aggarwal said, “Coinbase acts as a bridge between traditional finance and crypto that touches different customer segments including retail customers, institutions and businesses. »
Mainnet conference focuses on the future of crypto
Messari is a leading market intelligence provider for the crypto and Web3 industries. Its three-day conference brings together prominent crypto leaders, investors and industry professionals to explore the growing trend of tokenizing real-world assets (RWA) and integrating traditional financial instruments on blockchain – a signal of decentralized technologies moving towards widespread adoption.
This year, Messari made headlines when CEO Ryan Selkis resigned after a series of controversial tweets about American immigrants, violence against Trump’s opponents and the Civil War.
At the 2021 Mainnet event, the SEC subpoenaed two subpoenas to the event’s speaker, Terraform Labs founder and then-CEO Do Kwon. Kwon, once a crypto king, was arrested in March 2023 for falsifying travel documents while trying to flee Montenegro. He is currently awaiting extradition to the United States or South Korea, where he could face charges.
Messari Launches AI-Driven Crypto Assistant
At this year’s conference, Messari introduced Messari Copilot, an AI assistant designed for the crypto industry. This tool provides text-based answers to user queries based on Messari research and data, providing a comprehensive view of the crypto landscape.
