The Ethereum Foundation has assembled a dedicated team of developers to work on tools and technologies for protecting the blockchain against quantum computing. This initiative is being led by Thomas Koraj, who has confirmed the real threat of quantum computers emerging in the near future. Previously, Vitalik Buterin identified 2028 as the timeline for this threat.
The existing digital signatures on the Ethereum blockchain could become vulnerable in the future. The developers have already launched test networks with new signature systems. The Foundation is developing a leanVM system that will allow bundling multiple post-quantum proofs into a single compact proof without overloading the blockchain.
Thanks to Coinbase's initiative to form an expert council on quantum blockchain protection, the Ethereum team's new developments will receive independent evaluation.
