Ethereum drops EOF from the upgrade of fusaka after the community decline

Ethereum developers have officially abolished the EVM object format (EOF) from the next Fusaka network upgrade, citing technical uncertainties and community opposition.

According to Tim Beiko, a lead to support the protocol at the Ethereum Foundation, the decision was finalized during the call of the developers of Ethereum All Core (ACD) on April 28.

This announcement occurred shortly after Tomasz Stańczak, co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, said that the EOF would be part of the fusaka upgrade planned for the third or fourth quarter of 2025.

However, a widespread discharge from the Ethereum community has encouraged to reassess its implementation in the upgrade. The criticisms had argued that the EOF was unnecessarily too complex for the blockchain network.

The EOF refers to the proposed overhaul of the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM). The upgrade consists of several Ethereum improvement proposals (EIP) which aim to make the development of intelligent contracts simpler, effective and suitable for developers.

Why is the EOF delayed?

Beiko explained that the main reason to remove the Fusaka EOF was to avoid compromising the upgrade calendar.

He stressed that all customer teams have agreed to prioritize Peerdas, another important characteristic of Fusaka, which promises to improve the scalability and availability of data from Ethereum.

Beiko noted that the current debate on various versions of the EOF also made coordination difficult. According to him, these unresolved discussions hampered development progress.

The executive of the Ethereum Foundation also underlined a broader problem with the prioritization of proposals within the ACD process. He noted that many developers did not fully understand the implications of the specific EOF variant that they have supported. This lack of clarity, he said, should have been addressed earlier in the proposal stadium.

He said:

“There seemed to be a large support on the call to the variant of option D, halfway, some participants realized that they did not understand the implications of this variant.”

For all these reasons, Beiko concluded:

“It just seems to remove the Fusaka EOF while leaving the door to its champions to present a case for this in Glamsterdam, where, hopefully, the process will start by assessing the highest impact changes for Ethereum as a whole.”
