Ethereum (ETH) is expanding its influence in the AI sector as developers aim to integrate AI with decentralized technology. Based on this, new reports have revealed that ETH Developers are preparing to roll out an AI-focused update that could allow AI agents to work and engage directly on the blockchain network.
Ethereum prepares to launch new standards for AI agents
Ethereum is preparing to launch a major update that could transform the way artificial intelligence interacts with blockchain. The new upgrade, called ERC-8004, uses blockchain to search, select and work with AI Agents between different organizations without pre-existing trust, allowing open agent economies.
On January 27, the Ethereum team made an official announcement developer that ERC-8004 will soon be operational, opening the door to integration projects with AI in a decentralized manner. Marco De Rossi, one of the main authors of ERC-8004 and head of AI at MetaMask, declared This development of the protocol has been put on hold, as the team prepares to deploy it on mainnet, with a likely launch around 9 a.m. ET on Thursday, January 30.
The proposal was initially submitted in August 2025 and has since gone through several rounds of community review and revision before reaching its final implementation phase. Early adopters also tested the system to explore new applications for autonomous AI agents.
The new ERC-8004 protocol is designed giving AI agents on Ethereum unique identities and verifiable reputations, allowing autonomous systems to interact without relying on centralized platforms. Each AI agent will receive a unique ERC-721 NFT as an on-chain identifier, serving as a digital passport. The system also supports ENS fieldsallowing agents to have readable names and delegate control securely when needed.
ERC-8004 also introduces on-chain mechanisms for reputation and validation, allowing AI agents to record feedback and prove the results of task execution. The protocol also allows agents to record their actions and performance on the blockchain, so that other agents and AI users can verify their interactions and quickly establish trust.
Importantly, the Head of AI at the Ethereum Foundation also shared his thoughts on the new ERC-8004 standard. He said that Ethereum is now uniquely positioned to be the platform that “secures and regulates AI interactions.”
ETH’s Deep Dive into the AI Industry
Ethereum explains its role in artificial intelligencebuilding on previous efforts to connect the industry to decentralized technology. Although the upcoming ERC-8004 standard for AI agents has received a huge amount of attention, it is not Ethereum’s first step towards AI. The network has been exploring ways to support the development of blockchain and AI for years, laying the foundation for a broader ecosystem.
For example, the Ethereum Foundation previously created a dedicated AI team, known as the dAI team. This group is charge with the creation of an infrastructure that allows Ethereum to act as a coordination and settlement layer for autonomous systems.
