We hope you are all excited for the upcoming holiday season. Today we have some exciting new changes to announce for the Ethereum.org translation program and some milestones to celebrate.
To start off, we can’t thank you enough for all your support this year. Thanks to you, we were able to update 16 languages in 2020!
And since our launch 13 months ago, unique pageviews of translated content have increased 10x over last year. 🎉
But we don’t want to stop there…
Help us with v2.0+
Today we’re announcing our next big translation-ready content campaign. There’s a lot of content, so it’s in Crowdin in versions 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2. These versions cover the following pages:
- Eth2 – Important information that covers everything Eth2, from the Beacon Chain and Staking, to why we need Eth2 upgrades and how they will change the network.
- Resources for Ethereum Developers – a wide range of educational content aimed at beginners and advanced developers.
- and more!
Start translating version 2.0 in Crowdin now!
Let’s be global
Currently, the ethereum.org website supports 33 languages, but 25 languages are still in progress on Crowdin. We’re seeing increasing demand from smaller language communities, so we’ve added more regional languages to Crowdin.
Our goal is to make Ethereum.org more accessible to users around the world, regardless of language and location. We are getting closer and we believe that with your help (and by working as a community) we will achieve our goal.
A new UX for Ethereum.org translations
Despite the growth in translated page traffic, we noticed that the growth relative to overall traffic declined this year. As seen below, pageviews of translated pages reached almost 20% of total unique pageviews in February, but have declined to 10% in recent months.
We think it’s because we’ve expanded our English content such Over the past few months, translated content has become obsolete. As a result, more and more users are returning to the English website.
With this data in mind, as well as the desire to make our latest content accessible to all language sites, we are making more changes…
Language site updates
We are concerned that users of the site in other languages may not have the latest information, which is only available in English. We are therefore making the following changes:
- If a page is not available in your preferred language, we will display the English content next to the banner below (which will be translated into your preferred language). This means you will always see the most recent content, even if we haven’t been able to translate it yet.
- If a page you view is updated in English in your preferred language, we will offer you the option to view the new content in English. This way you will know that there is new information that has not yet been translated.
Our content edits are often more than just copy edits. We regularly update the site to add newer products, articles, and other resources that we don’t want you to miss.
We hope that this approach will provide a better experience of ethereum.organd that this could encourage more contributions to translation.
Translation program updates
- Hide old versions in CrowdIn
To focus on the latest website translation, we have hidden older versions (v.1.0 and v.1.1) in CrowdIn. Content previously translated in older versions is saved in our project’s translation memory. This will be used to speed up the translation of new versions by pre-translating the same or similar strings.
- Updated new versions: v.2.x
As mentioned, to translate any new content, we’ve split things into a few minor releases: v.2.0, v.2.1, and v,2.2. We have given these figures in order of priority. We encourage you to translate the lowest version first and then work your way up to higher versions. If you want to translate higher versions, that’s fine too, but we will upload them later after downloading lower versions.
Call for more translators
For many of us, 2020 has been a difficult year. We deeply appreciate the tireless enthusiasm and continued contributions of the community during this difficult time. We look forward to continuing our great work with you and welcoming more volunteers next year. We are always looking for additional translators to help us engage more people. If you know anyone who might be interested, please direct them to the translation programor to our Discord.
And don’t forget that you can always ask questions, collaborate with other translators or just hang out in our Discord server ethereum.org. Search the #translations channel for translation-specific queries.
We wish you and your loved ones a safe and peaceful end of the year.🌟🎄
