Looking back at 2023 and a look at what’s in store for 2024
2023 has been a great year for the team behind the Website ethereum.organd its community — we’re already feeling a little nostalgic, but it’s important to make room to celebrate the things the ethereum.org community helped us build in 2023 and continue the momentum into 2024.
With that in mind, we’ve put together a recap of our 2023 highlights from the ethereum.org community — enjoy!
The strong points
📚 ethereum.org Translatathon
56 languages, 217 participants, and 1.47 million words (🤯) translated in a week-long online competition, the Translatathon set the tone for the importance of continuously advancing accessibility in Web3, one word at a time. It’s one of our proudest achievements, with an impact and scale so impressive that it deserved to be his own summary article!
🔡 Translated images and diagrams
We believe that the experience of non-English speakers should be the same as that of speakers. So we realized that translating our pages into Spanish (for example) while leaving all the diagrams and images in English was not ideal. Our team developed a visual content translation process that has significantly improved the experience of all non-English speaking visitors to our site.
👛 Interactive portfolio presentations
Are you eager to start your Web3 journey, but nervous about jumping straight into downloading a dapp? We’ve all been there. With that in mind, the ethereum.org team has designed user-friendly guides on using wallets, improving the onboarding experience for new Ethereum users. Test it And Tell us what you think 😀.
🤔 Test your knowledge of Ethereum with quizzes
A learning portal without a learning game? Well, that was ethereum.org before June 2023… now you can test your Ethereum knowledge by taking one (or all) of the eight interactive quizzes available on the site Quiz Center. The community helps us expand our quiz library, so if you have any ideas or I would like to contribute by creating questions, check out our contributing guide!
✍️ Ethereum.org Writers Cohort
Try anything once, twice if you like it — and that’s why we’ve organized two editions of the ethereum.org Writers Cohort: a 3-week online program for people interested in writing about any Ethereum-related topic of their choice. With over 400 participants and over 540 articles published, we can definitely say that bringing our community together to learn together, put their ideas on paper, and support each other along the way has been the highlight of this initiative! You can find the #ETHWriters Recap on Twitter.
🛣️ Protocol Roadmap: (Almost) Everything in One Place
Ethereum’s roadmap is fluid and constantly evolving, but we’re listening to the latest proposals from builders around the world and have created a comprehensive hub detailing the Ethereum protocol roadmap. Curious about the ideas being proposed, upcoming changes, technical upgrades, and how Ethereum is being developed? Visit ethereum.org/roadmap to learn more.
💌 The EF blog, straight to your inbox
Want to receive updates from EF teams, gardeners and builders straight to your inbox? We helped code a feature that lets you subscribe to receive new articles on this blog directly in your mailbox
🏠 Geth and Solidity: a new home on the Internet
In addition to maintaining ethereum.org, our core team also participates in the web development of other EF community projects. Over the past year, we have been working on designing and deploying new websites for go-ethereum And Solidity and we couldn’t be more proud of the outcome – and more importantly, the impact it can bring to the Ethereum ecosystem.
🖼️ New year, new illustrations
We entered our era of radiance by commissioning eight new illustrations from ethereum.org, now featured on the site’s pages (see some: Layer 2, The developers house, Community center). Better yet, these works are open source and we encourage their use by the Ethereum community. Check out our assets page for more resources (and inspiration)!
🤲 Ethereum.org Contributor Tour @GG19
With the help of some awesome folks at Gitcoin, we’ve launched a support campaign to reward community members who have made significant contributions to ethereum.org. In total, 19 people were rewardedand this initiative validated our desire to find more ways to give value back to our community in 2024!
🧦 New product, who is it?
As a token of appreciation to our contributors, in November we shipped over 100 gift boxes to members of the ethereum.org community – pictures of socks took over our Twitter feed…well, at least we can all agree they were pretty stylish!
🎲 Hack and play in the infinite garden
Halfway through 2023, an idea started to emerge: what if we organized a gathering where people could disconnect for a bit from the hustle and bustle of Web3 events and spend some time relaxing and playing cards/board games with the community? With this principle, we organized (in)finite games at Devconnect IST and the feedback from the Ethereum community was overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately (or not), our team was too busy playing Uno and forgot to take a picture… I guess we should organize a second edition at Devcon SEA SO?
🧭 Navigation redesign
ethereum.org is still under development. Before we bid farewell to an eventful year, our team has redesigned the website menu navigation, improving the information architecture for better user navigation. We are rolling this out early in Q1, so keep an eye out for this change.
🧰 Full migration to NextJS
With over 16,000 pages and tens of millions of views each year, we can’t ignore the engine that powers this ship! After much sweat, tears, and countless PRs, we’ve successfully migrated ethereum.org’s tech stack to NextJS, paving the way for improved performance, accessibility, and scalability. We’re excited to deliver many new features in 2024 with this change!
So what’s next?
Our roadmap for the first quarter of 2024 is already available to receive comments, suggestions and contributions. Find out how you can get started contribute to ethereum.org (e.g. writing or reviewing content, creating new designs, translating the website, developing new features or fixing bugs, and many other possibilities) in our contributor pages.
Thanks again to everyone involved in the making of it ethereum.org It is possible. I wish you a great 2024 🎉
