Craig Wright, the fake creator of Bitcoin ($BTC) and a figure perpetually embroiled in crypto controversy, is going to prison. 2024 continues to surprise.
The UK High Court handed down a 12-month suspended prison sentence after finding Wright guilty of contempt for defying an earlier court order. This latest case involves his attempt to sue over intellectual property rights related to Bitcoin.
Who is Craig Wright? The fake Satoshi Nakamoto
For years, Wright, an Australian computer scientist, claimed to be the inventor of Bitcoin without proof and was found to have a very poor understanding of not only Bitcoin but programming in general. Although it was widely believed that he wasn’t even involved in the creation of Bitcoin, he attracted a cult following and began suing anyone working on Bitcoin for “infringing his copyright.”
Wright developed Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision ($BSV), which he called the “real Bitcoin.”
The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a group committed to stopping the abuse of cryptographic patents, has criticized Craig Wright for what it calls a “desperate publicity stunt.” The $1.1 trillion lawsuit, in which Wright claims rights to Bitcoin itself, apparently crossed a line, violating a previous ruling from July. Justice James Mellor agreed, upholding COPA’s position against what it sees as Wright’s legal grandstanding.
“As to the grounds for contempt, I have found each of them to be proven beyond reasonable doubt,” Justice Mellor said during the judgment.
Craig Wright wanted FOMO Satoshi to reveal his identity, but the real creator of Bitcoin never fell for the trick. The gains speak for themselves. Now Craig is going to rot in prison.
The real Satoshi will likely reveal his identity on his deathbed.
The legal procedure
Wright attended his sentencing virtually from an undisclosed location in Asia. Despite the ruling, Wright vowed to appeal. Questioned during the hearing, he refused to reveal his exact whereabouts.
Judge Mellor, who previously said Wright was not Satoshi Nakamoto, cited the defendant’s repeated attempts to circumvent the justice system.
“Dr. Wright is perfectly capable, once the dust settles, of once again escalating his public statements,” Mellor remarked in a scathing critique of Wright’s behavior.
Craig "Faketoshi" Wright did not appear at today’s contempt of court hearing. For what? He claims he is too poor to pay for the flight.

This court ruling marks a significant victory for COPA and the crypto industry as a whole. Wright has frequently targeted the Bitcoin community with lawsuits, encompassing defamation claims, disputes over the Bitcoin white paper, and more. Jonathan Hough, COPA’s legal representative, called Wright’s tactics an attempt to mislead and manipulate.
“This was a desperate publicity stunt to keep his bigoted supporters engaged,” Hough said in court.
Crypto advances
The Craig Wright contempt case illustrates the crypto community’s determination to safeguard its foundations.
This decision is a stark wake-up call: drop the noise, stay true to the work, and aim for a future built on real progress. Crypto has no patience for circus acts, only for those who are willing to push his limits.
