A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to 63 months in prison for running a violent extortion racket.
The operation was led by a figure known as the “Godfather of Crypto.” And there was nothing sophisticated about it. No exploits. No smart contract hacking. Just corrupt cops and physical intimidation dressed in crypto clothing.

The shake-down mechanism
The diagram didn’t need code. He needed a badge.
Michael David Coberg, 44, was an active LASD deputy and helicopter pilot. He used this position as muscle for Adam Iza, a crypto entrepreneur who called himself the Godfather of Crypto. Iza paid Coberg to terrorize his business rivals instead of suing them.
Two incidents defined the case.
In 2021, Coberg and his armed associates confronted a victim over a financial dispute. Her law enforcement presence validated the threat while Iza pressured the victim to transfer $127,000 to her. The victim’s passport was seized on site.
In another conspiracy, a victim was lured from Miami to Los Angeles under false pretenses, charged with obtaining narcotics, and then subjected to a traffic stop and arrest staged to destroy his credibility in a business dispute.
Coberg was ordered to pay $127,000 in restitution. Prosecutors summed up the situation simply. He betrayed his oath out of greed.

The broader lesson here is one that the crypto space rarely talks about. Digital security means nothing if people know you have wealth. The threat does not remain on the blockchain. This moves to the real world.
The Crypto Godfather title was part of the problem. Flashing status in this industry attracts predators. In this case, the predators had insignia.
Keep your assets private. If you have a dispute over crypto assets, seek legal advice. The line between security consultant and co-conspirator in this case did not exist.
A broader crackdown on facilitators
Coberg’s conviction is not unique. It’s part of a pattern.
Prosecutors are no longer content with pursuing hackers and exploiting developers. They are dismantling the human infrastructure behind cryptocrime. The people who provide cover, enforce deals and move money are now all in the crosshairs.
This is happening on a global scale. US Treasury sanctions North Korean IT workers. India arrests key figures in GainBitcoin Ponzi scheme. The DOJ is going after domestic enablers who thought their status made them untouchable.
This is not the case.
Adam Iza, the godfather of crypto himself, has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion. He now awaits judgment. Coberg’s 63 months constitute a heavy reference for the future.
The physical layer of crypto-crime is under siege. And the message from all jurisdictions is the same. No status or legitimacy protects you anymore.
