Gary Gensler, chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, said he will resign once President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, ahead of what are expected to be major changes at top watchdog agencies.
The cryptocurrency industry has welcomed the upcoming resignation of the SEC chairman, who has taken a particularly aggressive approach to regulating cryptocurrencies during his tenure, including filing high-profile lawsuits against two of the most major stock exchanges in the world.
Trump has not yet indicated his choice for Gensler’s replacement, but Reuters reported that he is expected to name one of the SEC’s current Republican commissioners, Hester Peirce or Mark Uyeda, as acting chief.
