Kremlin official warns boom in cryptocurrency mining could strain Russia’s energy supplies

Russia could face an energy shortage over the next 10 years due to the rapid expansion of Bitcoin mining, a Kremlin official warns.

Russia could experience an energy shortage in the next 5 to 10 years as cryptocurrency mining rapidly expands, a senior Kremlin official has warned, Russia’s official TASS news agency reports.

Maxim Oreshkin, deputy head of the presidential administration, raised concerns about potential pressures on Russia’s energy supplies, pointing out that regions such as southern Siberia are already experiencing capacity problems due to the increased crypto-mining activity.

Although Russia does not face any general energy usage problems, parts of the network have become energy deficient due to the growing demand for energy from Bitcoin mining, Oreshkin said. Southern Siberia, a popular region for crypto mining due to its low electricity costs, has seen significant pressure on its energy infrastructure as mining activity ramps up.

Russia close to a potential energy deficit

Addressing Russia’s energy future, Oreshkin suggested that the country may need to reconsider its approach to capacity building to ensure new energy facilities are developed at competitive costs.

“The question is whether we can create energy capacity under new conditions at a price that remains competitive for mining. »

Maxime Orechkine

The warning comes as energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining operations continue to expand in Russia, capitalizing on cheap energy resources.

In early October, BitRiver, a sanctioned crypto mining company, expressed confidence in Russia’s potential to overtake the United States in Bitcoin mining by 2027. BitRiver CEO Igor Runets said pointed out that the country’s cryptocurrency mining growth rate has matched that of the United States in recent years, narrowing the gap in energy consumption.

Runets highlighted that the changing regulatory environment is prompting oil and gas companies to re-evaluate their strategies, thereby fostering collaboration with Russian crypto miners.

Although Russia has signaled a favorable stance towards cryptocurrency mining, challenges remain for the cryptocurrency sector. As crypto.news reported, Russia will soon ban Bitcoin mining in several regions due to a severe electricity shortage. According to Russian Deputy Energy Minister Evgeny Grabchak, regions such as the Far East, southwest Siberia and the South are currently experiencing significant energy deficits, making it impossible to provide large capacities electric before at least 2030.
