Key notes

  • Malaysian police have entered 45 illegal Bitcoin Bitcoin mineral machines worth $ 52,145.
  • The operation stole $ 8,342 in electricity each month.
  • No arrests have been made, but surveys are underway.

Malaysian police made a raid on an illegal bitcoin mining union operating in the Hulu Terengganu and Marang districts on April 30. The authorities believe that the operation, based in the northeast region of Malaysia, used stolen electricity to supply its Bitcoin extraction activities.

According to a report of a local media, the raids took place in two distinct places, one in Bukit Perm, Hulu Terengganu and the other at Wakaf Tapai, Marang. The operation led to the entry of 45 Bitcoin extraction machines, worth around $ 52,145 (RM225,000). In addition to the mining platforms, the police also confiscated various other equipment used by the union.

The police carried out the raids in collaboration with the special commitment of Tenaga Naséal Berhad (TNB) against losses (SEAL). At the time of operations, no arrest was made. Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin, Terengganu police chief, confirmed that new surveys were underway concerning illegal mining activities.

Khairuddin also revealed that unauthorized mining platforms had stolen electricity worth $ 8,342 (36,000 RM) each month to the national electricity supplier. The union had managed to avoid detection by operating from residential and commercial properties while illegally pressing the power supply.

The position of Malaysia on cryptographic exploitation

The illegal mining in Malaysia is a criminal offense and sentenced to incur up to five years in prison, fines of up to $ 23,172.68 (100,000 RM), or both.

Although cryptocurrencies are not recognized as legal in Malaysia, the country does not consider Bitcoin and illegal exploitation, but this must be done with legally original electricity.

This is not the first time that Malaysian authorities have taken measures against illegal cryptocurrency operations. In August 2024, seven individuals were arrested and the vice-minister of energy revealed that minors using illegal energy sources had cost $ 723 million between 2018 and 2023 in the country.

In previous cases, Malaysian authorities adopted a hard position by destroying 985 illegal bitcoin mine machines using a steam roll, emphasizing their zero tolerance policy towards electricity flight.

In related news, the United States continues to carry out change to more sustainable energy sources in Bitcoin exploitation. North America now represents more than 80% of all sustainable Bitcoin extraction activities, with significant progress in the adoption of renewable energy options with low carbon content.

This trend reflects an increasing commitment to reduce the environmental impact of the exploitation of cryptography, by positioning the United States as a central figure of the global transition to greener extraction practices.
