A memecoin based on the name and likeness of a baby hippopotamus at a Thai zoo is stumbling at the gates following a new listing on Coinbase.
Yesterday, Coinbase announced the listing of Moo Deng (MOODENG), a memecoin based on Solana (SOL).
“Moo Deng (MOODENG) is now available on and in the Coinbase iOS and Android apps. Coinbase customers can log in to buy, sell, convert, send, receive, or store these assets.
Moo Deng is the name of a baby pygmy hippo born last summer at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Si Racha, Chonburi, Thailand. The hippo has become an internet sensation, inspiring both memes and memecoins. Moo Deng means “bouncing pig” in Thai.

In November, Moo Deng went viral again when he correctly “predicted” the outcome of the 2024 US presidential election.
Despite Moo Deng’s internet fame, MOODENG faltered in the hours following the Coinbase listing. About 24 hours after memecoin was added to Coinbase, MOODENG is down 12.4%. Meanwhile, the rest of the crypto markets are surging following Bitcoin’s (BTC) historic $100,000 breakthrough.
In contrast to MOODENG’s struggles, another Solana-based memecoin was torn apart after Coinbase added support on Wednesday.
Gigachad (GIGA), a crypto asset inspired by Russian bodybuilder Ernest Khalimov’s photoshoot, rose 51% after the leading US crypto exchange listed the memecoin.
