The researcher of the Ethereum Foundation, Dankrad Feist, proposed a significant modification of the network’s gas limit, aimed at increasing the transaction capacity and network performance.
On April 27, Feist submitted the Ethereum (EIP) 9698 improvement proposal, suggesting that the Ethereum gas limit should increase 100 times in the next four years thanks to automated parameters on the customer side.
According to Feist:
“The current gas limit mechanism is based on the voting of minors / operators, which lacks coordination and predictability. Although flexible, this approach can cause stagnation or too cautiously.
By introducing a foreseeable exponential exponential growth scheme by the customer, this EIP encourages a durable and transparent gas limit trajectory, aligned with the expected progress of the material and protocol efficiency. »»
The member of the Ethereum community, Fabda.eth, explained that the Feist plan would result in an increase of 100 times which would bring the network capacity to around 3.6 billion gases, supporting approximately 2,000 transactions per second and 6,000 transactions per block.
This would considerably increase the current gas limit on the network by around 36 million.
In particular, Feist’s proposal aligns a similar suggestion of the co-founder Ethereum Vitalik Buerin. In February, Buterin pleaded for an increase in the gas limit ten times, arguing that it would support the inclusion of transactions and the development of applications on the base layer, despite increasing dependence on layer 2 solutions.
Ethereum developers express concerns
While many within the community see the potential advantages of the widening of the gas limit of the blockchain network, several developers have expressed their caution about the aggressive growth rate of the FEIST proposal.
Lukasz Rozmej, a basic developer Ethereum, warned that any expansion should be agreed manually or progressive kept to avoid an unexpected network constraint.
The developer of the Ethereum Foundation, Jochem Brouwer, echoes these feelings. He warned that targeting an increase of 100x in four years could be too aggressive.
Instead, he recommended a more measured approach, suggesting an increase in the 2x gas limit in the next six months.
Brouwer added:
“Let us do this in stages before the majority of nodes are engaged in this increase of 100x in 4 years and we will have a problem when we discover that the limit becomes too high (so we must therefore coordinate with all the nodes to withdraw and stop it again).”
