Cryptocurrency exchanges will be necessary to obtain a license in Australian financial services and respect the same compliance tasks as the other companies, within the framework of new proposed laws which could trigger a wave of consolidation in the sector.

There are approximately 400 crypto exchanges – digital platforms where users can buy, sell and exchange cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum – recorded with the current regulator, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Center. Many are considered inactive.
