Threat actors would have had access to the New York Post account to target cryptographic subscribers. Some users complained about X that the pirates sent messages via Telegram, inviting them to appear in a podcast.
The founder and CEO of Kerberus, Alex Katz, reported the fraudulent message on May 3, which is supposed to come from the author and journalist Paul Sperry via the official account of NYP.
“The X account of the NY Post is compromised, sending users of Crypto inviting DM to their” podcast “,” he wrote.
“We are queuing new guests for our podcast and we would like to present you in an upcoming episode,” said the message of the crooks. “This is an exclusive editorial invitation, with available collaboration options and virtuals.”
Scammer “blocked” users of the answer: cybersecurity engineer
According to an article by the cybersecurity expert and founder of “Drew” Security, the crooks had prevented users from responding to the message they had published on Telegram.
It is “to prevent the real NYP team from being alerted to the compromise,” he said.
“Drew” warned users not to send a message to the individual on Telegram, stressing that “it’s a scam!”
“What is interesting in this case is that the crook has acquired unauthorized access but has not published ads with pumps or portfolio drainer,” noted the cybersecurity engineer and the collector NFT. “Instead, they put users as a message, then direct them to Telegram.”
Pirates use new messaging tactics
Another user also indicated that he had received a message from what seems to be a real ny post account. “They ask for an interview with specific details of the person (ordinal in my case).”
The user has also written that the interview begins with the disabled audio. These crooks “improve,” he warned.
“When you click to activate the audio, a contextual window gives the possibility of” cancel “or” wifi “,” he wrote in a separate thread. “I suppose WiFi gives the network access to the crooks.”
“DREW” also said that hackers are using courier and “find success due to the implicit confidence of previous conversations”. He added that this tactic would continue to grow, warning those who regularly discuss, in particular the members of the team.
“It is crucial to remember: even if you send a message to someone daily, always check their identity, never trust blindly.”
