Basic developers are planning to increase the network’s gas limit far beyond its current level. A new proposal from one of the best researchers in the Ethereum Foundation explains how it could happen in the coming years.
The researcher put pressure on an increase in the major Ethereum gas limit
Dankrad Feist, a basic contributor to the Ethereum Foundation, proposed a substantial increase in the network’s gas limit in a proposal published on Github. The EIP-9698 describes a plan to increase the current limit of 36 million to 3.6 billion in the next four years.
According to the update, the idea is to gradually increase the limit, about ten times every two years. The changes would start in June 2025 if they were approved. Following a chronology defined instead of sudden jumps allows the network time to adapt without developers or operators of overwhelming nodes.
The base layer of Ethereum could possibly manage approximately 2,000 transactions per second if everything goes as planned. It is a big change compared to the 15 to 30 transactions per second that it manages today.
Feist has not avoided highlighting the possible problems. According to him, a higher gas limit means larger blocks. This could slow down the propagation of the block and exert more pressure on the nodes that are not optimized. However, with more time to prepare and better equipment expected in the future, Feist thinks that it is a step that is worth it.
In particular, this proposal is based on recent efforts to increase capacity to the basic layer. It was indicated in the report that Feist and his colleagues Sophia Gold, Toni Wahrstätter, Carl Beek and Alex Stokes suggested pushing the gas limit at 150 million during the next Fusaka Hard fork.
In a recent article on X, Wahrstätter also discussed these scaling efforts. He mentioned that the network moved to higher gas limits while working on changes that would reduce storage requests and improve the way the blocks are treated.
Recently, the gas limit has increased from 30 m to 36 m. The road around 60 my summer blocked by limits coded in hard in customer implementations, which Pecctra resolves.
With a continuous accent on the L1 scaling, 100 m of gas until Glamsterdam is realistic.More information here:

In the midst of these trends, the co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin proposed a roadmap to fix confidentiality on the Ethereum Layer-1 chain, establishing a new reference for the functionality of the protocol.
More changes planned to support growth
It should be mentioned that the gas limit plan is not the only change in progress. The developers prepare several upgrades designed to make the network more efficient and easier to execute as it evolves.
One of these changes is EIP-4444. This would make the nodes optional to maintain the history of older blocks, reduce storage needs and help more people execute full nodes without expensive equipment.
Another proposal, EIP-7886, would give validators more time to treat the blocks. Currently, they only have two seconds. The change would extend to around ten seconds, offering more space for systems like ZKVMs that need additional time to generate evidence.
Other planned upgrades include EIP-7928, improving the organization of transactions for faster treatment. In addition, EIP-7863 will focus on reducing unnecessary work between blocks to improve global efficiency.
The developers expect these changes to take place gradually in the coming years while Ethereum is working on its next big upgrade, Glamsterdam, in 2026.
Basic contributors to the upgrading of Pectra gave no reason to doubt that the update will be posted on the Mainnet. Pectra upgrade should be launched in the first week of May 2025.
In other news, representatives of the gray scale met the working group on the Crypto de la SEC to persuade the agency to authorize the implementation of ETF ETF products. These updates have triggered a 0.51% increase in the price of Ethereum, which is now set at $ 1,810.23.
