Remember how many people within the gaming industry swore blindly that Web 3 games would be the future? This is not the case enough It played out that way, of course, but there are some who are still gnawing at the rock wall, including struggling French publisher Ubisoft.
He just came out Captain Laserhawk: The GAMEa spin-off of Far from it spin-off Blood Dragon that uses cryptocurrency and blockchain – two “revolutionary” elements that we were told would change the gaming landscape forever.
It only takes a quick read of Polygon’s excellent hands-on coverage of Captain Laserhawk to convince you to completely forget this game ever existed. It’s a painfully basic top-down shooter with imposed NFT nonsense – it won’t even start unless you’ve connected a cryptocurrency wallet and purchased one of the required NFT characters .
What’s particularly sad about all of this is that Ubisoft saw fit to include Rayman in the game as an announcer for its deathmatches. Oh, and you can also purchase a Rayman profile picture for 7,500 virtual coins (according to Polygon, at the time of writing, fewer than 10 of these have been purchased out of a stock of 425).
To be honest, Rayman do has a connection to Captain Laserhawk and recently featured in Netflix’s animated series of the same name – but that doesn’t entirely excuse its cynical inclusion in a game as tasteless as this.
This all seems like a complete disaster to us, but who knows, maybe this thing will take off and all of us skeptics will look very stupid. However, I’m willing to bet that won’t happen.
