Vitalik Buterin describes an evolutionary solution for the overvoltage of Ethereum data

The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has identified the peer data availability sampling (Peerdas) as a crucial tool to meet the growing requests for the Blob storage of the network. Peerdas is a feature of the next Fusaka upgrade.

His remarks then arrive that Ethereum records six Blobs per block, an important step that has intensified concerns about data bloating through the ecosystem.

Blubs have been introduced via EIP-4844 as temporary data containers on chain, designed to reduce costs for layer 2 rollers while avoiding permanent storage pressure. Unlike call data, the Blob expires after about two weeks, reducing long -term storage needs while preserving the integrity of transactions verification.

This structure makes the rolls cheaper to function and improves the scalability of Ethereum.

However, this design stimulated the rapid adoption of Blobs through the blockchain network. On September 24, the Hildobby chain analyst reported that several Ethereum Layer-2 solutions, notably Base, Worldcoin, Soneium and Scroll, are now based strongly on Blobs.

Given this, the analyst stressed that validators now require more than 70 gigabytes of space to manage blobs, warning that this figure could ball at more than 1.2 teraoctets if they were without being made.

This strong increase has forced developers to seek solutions that balance scalability with storage efficiency.

How does Peerdas work

Buterin explained that Peerdas will resolve this challenge by preventing any unique node from storing the data set and distributing network responsibility.

According to him:

“The way Peerdas works is that each node only requires a small number of” pieces “, such as a means of verifying probabilistic that more than 50% of the pieces are available. If more than 50% of the songs are available, then the node can theoretically download these pieces and use the erasure coding to recover the rest. ”

However, he noted that the system still requires complete block data at certain stages, such as during the initial distribution or if a block must be rebuilt from partial data.

To protect himself against manipulation, Buterin stressed the importance of “honest actors” who fulfill these roles. However, he pointed out that Peerdas is even resilient against large groups of dishonest participants, because other nodes can assume responsibilities if necessary.

Increase in blobs

Buterin stressed that the main developers of Ethereum remain cautious about the deployment of Peerdas despite their years of research on the project.

To minimize the risks, they agreed to stage the deployment by Blob parameter only (bpo) forks rather than a single capacity jump. The first fork, scheduled for December 17, will increase the Blob targets from 6/9 to 10/15. A second fork, scheduled for January 7, 2026, will once again increase the limits to 14/21.

This progressive approach allows developers to monitor network performance and gradually adjust. Buterin expects the Blub accounts to increase with these changes, laying the basics of a more aggressive increase later.

In his opinion, Peerdas will be vital to maintain the growth of layer 2 and prepare the base layer of Ethereum to manage higher gas limits and possibly migrate the execution data entirely in blobs.
