- Vitalik Buterin sees a broader purpose for prediction markets beyond betting.
- “Infofinance” is just one of many concepts Buterin outlined for potential future use cases for Ethereum.
Adding to a larger series exploring the potential future of Ethereum, co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently introduced a concept he calls “infofinance.”
The idea centers around prediction markets – a use case that is gaining traction in crypto with the rise of platforms like Polymarket.
Buterin sees them as much more than just betting platforms.
He argues that Ethereum’s network can improve applications for prediction markets by aligning financial incentives with the generation of accurate information.
In Buterin’s vision, “infofinance” encompasses prediction markets as well as a broader class of applications that can improve governance, social media, science, and decision-making.
“Start with a fact you want to know, then design a market to get that information optimally,” he explains.
This approach could improve data reliability, leading to better decision-making when accurate information is needed.
Buterin also plans to integrate AI-powered micro-markets into Ethereum, making prediction markets accessible even on low-stakes questions typically overlooked due to insufficient participation.

In addition to exploring infofinance, other potential avenues for Ethereum include user-focused improvements, such as reducing the cost of running validators, improving Layer 2 interoperability, and enabling ‘more efficient verification of transactions.
