The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, called for a reset when he introduced a new proposal describing how in five years, “Ethereum can become close to Bitcoin”.
Insisting on the simplification of the protocol, Buterin’s blog published on May 3, 2025 – Simplify the L1 said: “One of the best things about Bitcoin is how Beautifully simple The protocol is.
“Keeping the simple protocol provides a number of advantages that are essential for Bitcoin or Ethereum to be a credible basic layer on a global scale,” said the blog.
According to the co-founder of Ethereum, “worrying about simplicity is, like decentralization, a short-term cost for the advantages which do not appear immediately. But in the long term, it will be worth it. ”

Ethereum is distinguished from bitcoin by prioritizing programmability, flexibility, rapid evolution
To worry about simplicity is, like decentralization, a short -term cost for the advantages which do not appear immediately. But in the long term, it will be worth it. Let us make each part of the Ethereum specification a place where things like this can happen:

Buterin’s message is clear – if Ethereum must remain the backbone of decentralized finance and the next generation of internet applications, it must return to its roots and adopt radical simplicity.
He warned that “Ethereum has lost sight of simplicity, trying to do too much while accumulating on a technical debt,” he warns. Buterin thus pleaded for a major reset. He underlined the “beautifully simple protocol” of Bitcoin as a model, noting that even an intelligent high school student can include Bitcoin’s main mechanics, while Ethereum’s complexity now requires in -depth expertise and specialized teams to manage and audit.
The EVM, the Ethereum execution engine, has become inflated and difficult to optimize. Buterin proposes replacing it with RISC-V, a minimalist virtual machine already proven in zero knowledge cryptography projects. “I suggested that we replace the EVM by RISC-V, another virtual machine which is the virtual machine in which Ethereum ZK-Progan will be written,” wrote Buterin.
Buterin also called to merge redundant tools and adopt more effective cryptographic methods, such as unified erasure coding and Binary Merkle trees.

Buterin’s proposal is not a call to rewrite rewriting, but a progressive and multi -year strategy.

The proposed reset does not only concern technical architecture – it is a question of preserving the values that have made Ethereum a global force: openness, decentralization and credible neutrality.
