20 Million Bitcoins Mined: Why Bitcoin’s Fixed Supply Cap Still Matters

By Thomas Perfumo, Kraken Chief Economist

Bitcoin just minted its 20 millionth coin. With only 1 million left to mine – and those spread across over a century of halves to come – Bitcoin’s supply is, for all intents and purposes, effectively fixed. More than 95% of all bitcoins that will ever exist already exist.

It’s worth stopping to consider how strange and significant this is.

The code is the law. In this case, literally.

Gold miners will dig deeper. Central banks will print more fiat money. Bitcoin can only supply 21 million coins. The 21 million cap is not a policy. This is not a Gentleman’s Agreement. It is a code running simultaneously on thousands of nodes around the world, enforced by economic incentive structures that make violation essentially impossible without the consensus of the very people who would be harmed by the violation.

Fifteen years of keeping a promise

Satoshi Nakamoto set the limit of 21 million from Bitcoin’s genesis block in January 2009. It was an act of deep monetary vision. No central monetary authority ever credibly committed to an absolute ceiling on supply – because no central authority could be trusted to hold the line forever.

Take for example Roman denarii, degraded over a period of two centuries, going from a silver purity level of over 95% to less than 5%. Or the aptly named Byzantine solidus, whose gold purity level fell from 95% to less than 33% in a few decades.

Bitcoin solves this problem not through institutions or promises, but through mathematics and decentralized consensus. The 20 million milestone is proof that architecture has held up. Block by block, halved, the code did exactly what it was designed to do.

Halving: a clock integrated into the blockchain

The path to 20 million was not linear. It’s a story told through the ages. In the early years of Bitcoin, 50 new coins were minted with each block. Then 25. Then 12.5. After the 2024 halving, this number fell to 3,125. Each halving is a programmatic squeeze, a reminder built into the protocol itself that Bitcoin was designed to become scarcer over time.

Annualized supply inflation is already less than 1%; inferior to gold, which is generally considered the most durable form of “hard money”. We are already living in the era of Bitcoin, which is the most difficult form of traditional currency.

Why this moment matters beyond numbers

The minting of the 20 millionth Bitcoin is a useful moment to step back and appreciate what the monetary architecture of Bitcoin has achieved. In a world of excess and abundance, Bitcoin represents one of the few truly scarce assets. Unlike traditional currencies whose supply is unlimited, Bitcoin’s maximum supply is mathematically limited.

Bitcoin’s programmed scarcity, coupled with predictable issuance and decentralized design, is what sets it apart from competing forms of currency and asset classes. No government has changed it. No crisis has broken him. No bear market has rewritten it. The code held.

In the modern era, we find ourselves faced with technological advances that are accelerating the pace of change. The world order is changing rapidly and uncertainty is omnipresent. Now more than ever, we need a trusted, Internet-native, publicly recognized store of value – one that we know will not bow to human opportunism in the coming century and beyond.

The 21 million cap has always been the important point. This is still the case.
