Effective immediately via the signing of Mayor’s Executive Order No. 57, the office is designed to support the growth of digital assets and blockchain within New York City while encouraging investment in the city by the crypto industry.
“While we have been planning to launch this office for months, we wanted to make sure we got it right and conducted numerous interviews to fill the executive director role before this announcement,” said press secretary Kayla Mamelak Altus. Decrypt.
“Once we found a candidate who could deliver on our vision for this position, we followed our review process and made the announcement at the appropriate time,” she added.
To lead the office, Mayor Adams selected Moises Rendon, a former digital asset and blockchain policy advisor. Rendon has worked at the New York City Office of Innovation and Technology since 2024.
Under his leadership, the office will first create a commission of digital asset officers to help guide the office’s work.
“Mayor Adams’ creation of this new office proves that the future is now for digital assets and blockchain in New York,” Rendon said in a statement. “I am honored to lead the nation’s first municipal office dedicated to the successful and responsible deployment of these technologies. »
Creation of the Digital Assets Office follows Adams’ launch of digital assets consultancy in May, similarly designed to attract investment and talent from crypto companies to New York as the mayor sought to make the city the “crypto capital of the world.”
At the time, he said the city was exploring the use of blockchain technology for birth and death records, among other things.
Adams celebrates accepted his first paychecks for his duties as mayor of Bitcoin And Ethereum in 2022, earning him the nickname “Bitcoin Mayor.” Since then, the price of both assets has increased significantly, leading Adams to poke skeptics with quips such as: “Who’s laughing now?”
In May, Adams called for an end to the New York BitLicensea regulatory license renowned for its strict compliance rules.
Mayor Adams will leave office on January 1 as he is no longer seeking re-election, having abandoned the race end of September.
Myriad’s predictors currently give Zohran Mamdani about an 88% chance of winning the November election and taking office in January. That matches Polymarket’s New York City election market odds, giving Andrew Cuomo the second-best chance of winning, at about 10%.
