Google searches for ‘Crypto’ hit one-year low as investor interest fades

Global interest in cryptocurrencies appears to be cooling as 2025 draws to a close, with Google search data indicating a sharp decline in retail attention.

Key points to remember:

  • Google search interest in the word “crypto” has fallen to its lowest level in a year in the United States, indicating low engagement in retail.
  • Stock market crashes, memecoin losses and political shocks have eroded investor confidence.
  • Bitcoin’s prolonged consolidation has failed to push retail traders back.

Global searches for the term “crypto” are sitting just above their lowest level in a year, while search volume in the United States has already fallen to its lowest level in the last 12 months, suggesting mixed investor sentiment in key markets.

Data from Google Trends, which measures search interest on a scale of 0 to 100, shows that global searches for “crypto” fell to 26 on Monday, just two points above the yearly low of 24.

US crypto search interest hits one-year low as retail declines

In the United States, search volume fell to 26, the lowest level in a year. The decline reflects a broader decline in retail engagement following months of market turmoil and a decline in enthusiasm for speculative trading.

Search interest fell sharply during the market’s April selloff, triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s hardline tariff policies, and has struggled to recover since.

Commenting on the trend, crypto commentator Mario Nawfal said that retail participation has all but disappeared.

“There is virtually no retail interest in crypto right now,” he said, adding that public trust has been damaged by the collapse of high-profile memecoins linked to the Trump family, many of which have lost more than 90% of their value from peak levels.

Nawfal noted that casual investors who regularly asked about crypto have remained silent, highlighting how sentiment has changed.

The decline in search activity reflects the broader psychology of the market, which remains fragile several months after a sharp slowdown in October.

Do we need to start injecting dinosaur coins again to bring retail back?

After the Trump/Melania memecoin drama, it appears that retail has lost a lot of confidence in the space.

This flash crash wiped out nearly $20 billion in leveraged positions in a single day, with some altcoins plunging as much as 99%.

Bitcoin also suffered a sharp reversal, falling from an all-time high above $125,000 to around $80,000 in November.

Since then, the asset has traded in a tight range between $80,000 and $90,000, offering few catalysts to reignite retail enthusiasm.

Crypto Fear Index Lingers in Fear Territory After November Low

Other sentiment indicators paint a similar picture. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index fell to a yearly low of 10 in November, signaling “extreme fear” among investors.

Although the index has since recovered slightly to 28, it remains firmly in fear territory, suggesting that caution still dominates market behavior.

In October, Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, and Tom Lee, president of BitMine, suggested that Bitcoin could still climb as high as $250,000 before the end of the year.

Instead, Bitcoin fell about 3% over the past 30 days, with sentiment worsening through December.

Last week, K33 also said that Bitcoin’s prolonged selling pressure from long-term holders may be approaching its limits after years of steady distribution.
