Bittensor Just Trained a 72 Billion Parameter AI Model Without a Data Center – Is TAO Crypto About to Hit $379?

Bittensor crypto TAO is trading at $334 following the success of Covenant-72B – a 72.7 billion parameter model trained on over 70 anonymous, distributed nodes without a single data center or nine-figure budget behind it.

The 90% rally displayed by the TAO through March 2026 is not a narrative exchange; This is a direct market response to a technical milestone that decentralized AI has been pursuing for years.

But this step deserves precise framing. Covenant-72B proves that permissionless networks can coordinate large-scale model training. This doesn’t dissolve hardware physics which still favors centralized clusters for edge pre-training.

The most commercially urgent story – and one worth watching for TAO pricing – is happening on the inference side, where Subnet 64 is already undercutting the costs of centralized cloud providers.

Decentralized training vs. pre-training physics: what the Covenant-72B really proves

Training a 72B model typically requires a tightly coupled cluster of high-end GPUs connected by InfiniBand – hardware that costs tens of millions of dollars and requires sub-millisecond latency between nodes.

The conventional wisdom was that basic internet connections could never bridge this gap. Covenant-72B directly challenged this, using SparseLoCo – a technique combining sparsification, 2-bit quantization and error feedback – to reduce communication between nodes by more than 146 times compared to previous distributed executions.

The result: Bittensor’s Templar subnet trained on 1.1 trillion tokens from over 70 peers with blockchain-based validation via the Gauntlet system, which used OpenSkill loss assessment and leaderboards to reward high-quality nodes with TAO and penalize underperformers.

The base model scored 67.1 on the MMLU zero shot, outperforming both the LLaMA-2-70B (65.6) and the LLM360 K2 (65.5). The chat variant, Covenant-72B-Chat, dominated its peer group on instruction following criteria. All weights and code have been released under the Apache License – permissionless, ready to use.

The uncomfortable truth is that pretraining at the edge – think GPT-5 scale runs – still requires co-located hardware that no distributed network currently matches. The physics of VRAM timing and bandwidth at this scale have not yet been solved by SparseLoCo. What Covenant-72B proves is arguably something more important in the short term: a permissionless network of anonymous contributors can produce a model competitive with results from billion-dollar corporate labs. This shifts the conversation from “can decentralized AI work?” to “how quickly is this improving?” »

It is in the answer to this second question that the economy of inference becomes decisive. Inference is modular and hardware heterogeneous: you don’t need InfiniBand to answer a query. The financial advantage of subnet 64 over centralized cloud is already a commercial reality and not a roadmap item.

Can TAO Crypto Hold $334 and Target a Price of $379?

The TAO crypto is currently trading at $334, up about 90% from its March low, with 24-hour volume of 244,000 – a sustained accumulation rather than a single session peak.

The RSI (Relative Strength Index, a momentum indicator ranging from 0 to 100 where readings above 70 signal overbought conditions) is high but has yet to display the type of extreme readings that preceded previous corrections.

The structural anchor is the 200-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average), a trend-smoothing indicator that weights recent prices more heavily) at $275. This level moved from resistance to support during the March rally and has held at every retest since. A close above $275 on a weekly basis constitutes the macroeconomic bottom; bulls need this level intact to assert that the broader trend has changed character.

The immediate target is $379 – last week’s intraday high. A clear break above this level on volume comparable to the March surge would open the way to the next significant resistance group.

TAO is pretty closely tied to Bitcoin here, so if BTC holds above $85,000 and TAO can push back above $379 with real volume, that’s where momentum returns and opens a move towards the $420-$450 area, especially if developer activity picks up around the new release and generates new demand.

Right now, however, it appears that things are calming down after the initial hype, with the price likely hovering between $300 and $379 while the market resets. As long as that $275 EMA holds, the structure is still intact, and it simply looks like a reaccumulation, not weakness.

The risk arises if the market as a whole turns around, because if Bitcoin loses strength and TAO falls below that $275 level over a longer closing period, the entire pattern breaks and opens the door for a deeper decline towards the low $200s.

Volume at 244K is not a ghost rally. But at current prices, predicting TAO prices requires BTC stability as much as Bittensor-specific catalysts.
