AfCFTA launches ADAPT with IOTA to transform commerce in AfricaAfCFTA launches ADAPT with IOTA to transform commerce in Africa

ADAPT aims to build the most advanced digital public infrastructure for trade on the continent, integrating technology to make cross-border trade faster, more efficient and more transparent.

This is a pivotal moment in Africa’s economic development, providing opportunities for businesses, governments and technology innovators to engage in the continent’s booming business ecosystem.

How ADAPT will transform commerce

ADAPT is much more than just a technology platform. By streamlining customs and logistics processes, it could potentially double intra-African trade by 2035. Currently, African countries face slow and fragmented border procedures, which increase costs and reduce competitiveness. ADAPT addresses these challenges by creating a unified digital trade network that enables real-time tracking, automated documentation and faster customs clearance times. Estimates suggest the platform could reduce border crossing times by more than 50%, allowing goods to move more quickly between countries and saving businesses valuable time.

Africa is the future of global trade 🌍
Led by @ZLECAfin partnership with @IOTA, @WEF & @InstitutGCADAPT is building a public digital infrastructure connecting Africa with seamless cross-border commerce, instant payments and secure digital identities.

The economic potential is significant. ADAPT is expected to unlock more than $70 billion in additional business value and generate $23.6 billion in annual economic gains. These figures show how a single digital infrastructure can reshape trade flows, boost economic activity and encourage private sector investment. For example, Nigerian agricultural exporters could move their goods to neighboring countries more efficiently, increasing their sales and profits while reducing waste due to border delays.

Today in Johannesburg, @ZLECAf launched ADAPT – a landmark initiative to build the world’s most advanced digital public infrastructure for commerce with the potential to:

The launch of ADAPT is part of a broader global trend: governments and commercial organizations are increasingly relying on digital infrastructure to drive commerce. In Asia and Europe, similar platforms have enabled countries to simplify cross-border payments and documentation, reducing friction and driving growth. By adopting digital solutions, Africa is positioning itself to be more competitive in global markets while supporting regional integration.

I’m excited to see the vision of public digital commerce infrastructure growing across Africa! ADAPT reflects the same technology and principles that guide our work and is led by @ZLECAf with members of the TWIN Foundation @WEF, @IOTA & @InstitutGC. This could unlock billions of value 🦾
