Altcoins Rise on Bitcoin Pizza Day – Why is Capital Moving Away from BTC?

On Friday, May 22, Bitcoin (BTC) rebounded to $77.8k and the altcoin’s market capitalization climbed back above the $1 trillion mark. For a few hours, it appeared that BTC would maintain its momentum and lead altcoins higher.

This day also marked Bitcoin Pizza Day, the day the first actual BTC transaction took place. Yet despite the brief rebound, a crypto market sell-off began and altcoins underwent a correction.

Altcoin relative strength has declined

At the height of the recent bull market, the altcoin market capitalization (TOTAL2) reached $1.77 trillion. This figure was just slightly higher than the $1.71 trillion figure reached during the 2021 bull run.

The weekly chart shows a range formation, and the average level stands at $1.07 trillion. This level was retested as resistance earlier in May before being rejected. Friday’s downturn was marked by a brief rise above $1 trillion, followed by a further decline.

Investor Diligence and Importance of Monitoring Capital Turnover

On Bitcoin Pizza Day, only a few tokens, such as NEAR Protocol (NEAR), Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET), and Worldcoin (WLD), posted a green day. Most top altcoins, including those that have recently shown bullish strength, posted losses.

This fact alone seems to indicate that investors are focusing on the AI sector. However, we should also consider the most powerful and relatively large altcoins.

Hyperliquid (HYPE) and ZCash (ZEC) were among the best performers, with increases of 38.87% and 69.62%, respectively, in May. Ondo (ONDO) and Venice Token (VVV) have also shown bullish strength and are up 46.26% and 101.58% for the month so far.

Sixteen years ago on this day, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz bought two Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 BTC, or about $40 at the time.

The same BTC would be worth $775 million today, but Hanyecz has claimed in interviews that he does not regret spending Bitcoin on pizza.

Ultimately, the price action that day was not encouraging, but the diligent investor can compare the relative strength. With a little vigor and a little luck, they could find the altcoins best positioned to outperform Bitcoin over the next cycle.

Final summary

  • Bitcoin Pizza Day saw price volatility in the market, and only a few altcoins held up well on the day.
  • Tracking relative strength trends and combining the narratives with the potential for use for the next cycle can help investors predict the next big names in crypto.
