Anchorage Digital has added TRX custody and staking of the Tron crypto network to its platform, making it the first federally chartered crypto bank in the United States to bring the Tron network into regulatory scope.
Tron hosts $84 billion in USDT, more than Ethereum, but has until now operated almost entirely outside of US institutional frameworks.
This gap is reduced here. A federally licensed custodian supporting Tron is not the same as a state-licensed exchange listing TRX. This is a different category of legitimacy, with different compliance obligations, different implications for counterparties and a different signal to the rest of the institutional market.
- Milestone: Anchorage Digital is the first federally chartered US crypto bank to take over custody of Tron, bringing TRX and future TRC-20 assets including 84 billion dollars in USDT – within a compliant institutional framework.
- Regulatory context: Tron and founder Justin Sun has faced long-standing regulatory frictions in the United States, including a delisting of TRX from Coinbase in 2023; The SEC dismissed securities claims against Sun and the Tron Foundation earlier this month, clearing a major hurdle.
- Gradual deployment: Initial support covers the custody of TRX on the main Anchorage platform and Port institutional portfolio; Support for TRC-20 tokens and native TRX staking infrastructure will follow in subsequent phases.

What the Anchorage bank is actually building
Initial launch supports TRX custody on Anchorage’s primary regulated platform and its Port institutional self-custody portfolio. Support for TRC-20 tokens and the deployment of native TRX staking in stages, a staged structure that allows regulatory validation at each stage rather than a single large-scale deployment.
The TRC-20 support is the operationally significant layer. This means that institutions will be able to hold and manage Tron-based stablecoins, including the 84 billion dollars Source USDT on Tron, directly into a federally regulated custodial account. This is the use case that matters for institutional treasury services.
Nathan McCauley, co-founder of Anchorage, described the move as infrastructure-focused: “As TRON expands its presence in the United States, institutions need reliable infrastructure to securely hold assets and participate in the network. By supporting TRON on Anchorage Digital’s regulated platform, we are helping to integrate one of the largest crypto ecosystems into an institutional framework.”
The distinction granted by the Federal Charter is important here. Anchorage holds a national trust bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the same regulatory agency that oversees JPMorgan and Citibank. State-licensed depositories operate under a patchwork of state regimes. A federally chartered institution performing AML/BSA due diligence on Tron and clearing it for custody sets a compliance benchmark that state-level operators and foreign custodians cannot duplicate by definition.
The scale of Tron’s network warrants this scrutiny. The channel has recorded more than 371 million total number of user accounts and more than 13 billion total transactions. This is not a niche protocol. This is a stable core infrastructure that US institutions have been structurally prevented from compliantly engaging with – until now.

Regulatory Authorization of Tron Crypto as a Market Structure Event
Basic context is crucial. Coinbase delisted TRX in 2023 under regulatory pressure. The SEC pursued securities violations against Sun and the Tron Foundation, complaints only dismissed earlier this month, with Rainberry, the parent company of Sun’s BitTorrent network, paying a $10 million fine for undisclosed promotions of BTT tokens.
This legal overhang suppressed US institutional engagement with Tron for years. Its removal, combined with Anchorage’s federal due diligence authorization, reopens the market.
Anchorage’s federal imprimatur gives other regulated entities in the United States (prime brokers, custodians, asset managers) a benchmark for compliance.
When the only federally chartered crypto bank in the United States performs AML/BSA diligence on a network and approves it for custody, it functions as a de facto institutional clearinghouse signal.
Expect other regulated sites to ramp up their own Tron reviews.
