Bitwise Launches Avalanche ETF With Staking, What It Could Mean for AVAX Crypto

Bitwise has launched BAVA, an exchange-traded fund directly holding Avalanche tokens (AVAX crypto) and staking a portion of those holdings to generate a return for investors. This is the first Avalanche ETF to hit the market with a staking component built in from day one, beating out competing repositories from VanEck and Grayscale to launch.

The detail that most headlines miss, however, is that this isn’t just a new crypto ticker on an exchange; staking mechanisms change the relationship between the product and the AVAX offering in a way that matters to anyone looking at the token.

BAVA launched with $2.5 million in assets and saw trading volume of more than $400,000 in its first 90 minutes, a debut that Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart described as “pretty strong even if it wasn’t a blockbuster.” So what does a staking ETF actually do differently, and what could this mean for AVAX demand? Let’s unpack the mechanics before drawing any conclusions.

What is the AVAX Crypto Bitwise Staking ETF – and how it differs from a spot ETF

Market capitalization

Here’s how the mechanisms work. A standard cash ETF simply holds an asset and tracks its price; you are exposed to the ups and downs of AVAX crypto, nothing more. The Bitwise Staking ETF does this, but it also runs most AVAX. Think of it like owning a house and renting it out: the house continues to appreciate or lose value, but it also generates monthly income while you wait.

In the case of Avalanche, staking means locking tokens with network validators to help process transactions and secure the blockchain. In return, the network pays newly issued AVAX as a reward.

Bitwise holds approximately 70% of the fund’s AVAX holdings, maintaining a 30% liquidity reserve assessed monthly to cover redemptions. Of the staking proceeds, Bitwise keeps 12% to cover operational costs and distributes the rest to investors – a revenue sharing model that no competing Avalanche ETF product currently offers.

When it comes to fees, BAVA comes in at an annual sponsorship rate of 0.34%, undercutting VanEck’s 0.40% and Grayscale’s 0.50%. New investors receive a full fee waiver for 30 days or until the fund reaches $500 million in assets. This cost structure, combined with the yield component, constitutes the product’s clearest competitive argument. The Ethereum Foundation’s $50 million staking move demonstrated how institutional staking generates real return for token holders – BAVA applies similar logic in a regulated fund wrapper.
