The country’s data protection dog, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), has made a prescription. The company must stop offering cryptographic awards to the Brazilians.
Brazil raises concerns concerning incentives to scans Worldcoin eyes
Worldcoin, now known as World Network, gave crypto rewards in exchange for biometric data of eye analyzes. However, Brazil raised the red flag. They are concerned with the validity of user consent and the sensitive nature of biometric information.
The main concern of the ANPD was that the supply of financial incentives, such as crypto, could compromise the free and informed consent required by Brazilian law during the collection of personal data. The guard dog stressed that people, especially those in vulnerable situations, could feel in a hurry to give their consent in exchange for digital currency. This has made alarms on manipulation potential, as well as the irreversible nature of the collection of these personal data. Once biometric data like iris scans are taken, they cannot be deleted, leaving a significant confidentiality problem.

This decision follows a similar repression in Europe. In December 2024, the German data protection authority also issued corrective measures for Worldcoin, calling for modifications to comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (RGPD) of the EU. The authorities of the two regions tighten the reins on digital identity projects, in particular when they involve sensitive data such as biometrics.
In just 18 months since its launch, World Network has made significant progress, checking 10.6 million individuals while increasing its user base to 22.7 million impressive. The platform, which aims to revolutionize digital identity and financial networks thanks to innovative biometric technology, has experienced rapid adoption.
