CADD stablecoin gets digital custody of Anchorage

Tetra Digital Group’s CADD, the first Canadian dollar regulated stablecoin issued by a financial institution, can now be held by Anchorage Digital for institutional clients.

Summary

  • Anchorage Digital will provide regulated custody of CADD to institutional investors
  • CADD is backed 1:1 by Canadian dollars held in an approved Canadian trust company.
  • The stablecoin is approved by Alberta regulators and designed for on-chain CAD settlement.

As of May 22, institutions can now hold CADDs through Anchorage Digital, a federally chartered crypto bank and qualified custodian that offers regulated digital asset infrastructure to banks, fintechs, and asset managers.

How does CADD’s Anchorage Guard change institutional access?

In its post, Tetra Digital Group said “institutions can now custody CADD with Anchorage Digital,” describing Anchorage as “a federally chartered crypto bank and qualified custodian providing regulated digital asset custody infrastructure for institutional clients.”

Anchorage Digital Bank, which operates under a national trust charter in the United States, bills itself as “the first federally chartered crypto bank” and emphasizes services such as custody, settlement and staking for institutional counterparties.

For CADD, this gives asset managers, corporations and treasury offices a way to keep the Canadian dollar stable within existing institutional workflows instead of relying on retail-oriented exchanges or self-custody.

By design, each CADD token is backed 1:1 by Canadian dollars held in trust by Tetra Trust Company, a licensed Canadian trust company that has received regulatory approval from the Alberta Treasury and Finance Board to issue the payment stablecoin through its agent CAD Digital Inc.

According to a launch release from Business Wire, “CADD is Canada’s only stablecoin issued through a Canadian financial institution, placing on-chain CAD settlement under full regulatory oversight,” with reserves held in cash and cash equivalents at Canadian financial institutions.

This structure aligns with Ottawa’s emerging stablecoin framework, which is moving toward 1:1 high-quality liquid asset requirements, redemption at par, and the use of qualified custodians for fiat-backed tokens.

Why CADD is important for Canadian regulation of stablecoins and crypto rails

Tetra Digital Group introduced CADD as Canada’s first payment stablecoin that is both 1:1 backed by Canadian dollars and issued by a regulated financial institution, differentiating it from previous CAD tokens that operated outside of provincial prudential regimes.

The company said the regulatory approval from Alberta Treasury and Finance “marks a national first for digital asset infrastructure in Canada” by allowing Canadian dollars to flow on blockchain “under financial services regulation.”

According to BNN Bloomberg, CADD positions itself as “the first regulated stablecoin issued by a financial institution” in the country, with CADD designed to always be equal to one Canadian dollar, targeting use cases such as domestic payments, treasury and cross-border transfers.

Tetra Digital Group has already launched CADD on Ethereum, Base and Tempo, and plans to extend it to Solana, offering developers and institutions multiple layer one and two environments for Canadian dollar settlement.

It comes like Canada is finalizing a federal stablecoin regime that will require issuers backed by fiat currencies to register with the Bank of Canada, maintain 1:1 reserves, and separate customer assets from their own balance sheets, while prohibiting yield on stablecoin holdings.

For Anchorage Digital, the addition of CADD expands a suite of custody services that has seen growing institutional demand in recent years, with the company previously reporting an 80% quarterly increase in assets under custody as investors sought safer venues following a series of crypto insolvencies.

In a LinkedIn update, Tetra Digital Group highlighted that CADD is “structured as a payment stablecoin” and “the first regulated stablecoin in Canada to be structured as a payment instrument issued by a financial institution”, highlighting its ambition to serve as a compliant digital money for the Canadian financial system.
