Coinbase says Algorand and Aptos are better prepared for quantum threat

Coinbase’s Quantum Computing Advisory Board has released its first formal assessment of blockchain security, and two names stand out: Algorand and Aptos.

According to the advisory group, which draws on expertise from Stanford University, the Ethereum Foundation and several other institutions, these two chains have made architectural choices that better position them to survive in the era of quantum computing. According to the board, all other proof-of-stake blockchains must begin upgrading immediately.

The detail missing from most headlines is what “better preparedness” actually requires. This is not a certification or safety label.

It’s a signal about how these networks were designed from the ground up, and what that design philosophy means for the millions of people who hold assets on chains that weren’t built with quantum resilience in mind.

What Coinbase’s Quantum Warning Really Means for Algorand and Aptos

Here is the main problem in simple English. Today, most blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, secure transactions using a mathematical form called elliptic curve cryptography. Think of it like a lock that takes a conventional computer billions of years to pick.

A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could pick this same lock in minutes. Google research from March 2026 suggests that advanced quantum machines could potentially crack Bitcoin and Ethereum encryption in as little as nine minutes.

Another day, another industry leader recognizes Algorand’s post-quantum technology.

Today, @coinbase published an article detailing post-quantum blockchain implementations.

This is the threat. But this doesn’t affect all channels equally, and that’s where Algorand and Aptos come in.

Algorand was built with a cryptographic framework that is closer in structure to post-quantum standards, the patterns that the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology spent 20 years standardizing and recently finalized as a recommended migration path for the entire industry. Aptos, launched more recently, integrated modern cryptographic primitives from the start rather than inheriting legacy choices made in 2008 or 2015.

Phillip Martin, Coinbase’s chief security officer, was blunt: “Your crypto is safe today. But a quantum computer capable of threatening blockchain cryptography will eventually be built, and the industry needs to start preparing now, not when it’s urgent.” This is the framework, no panic, but a structural warning with a real deadline.

Why Algorand and Aptos stand out in the quantum readiness race

Most large blockchains still operate on cryptographic assumptions that predate serious research into quantum computing. Bitcoin uses the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm, which is vulnerable to a quantum attack on any wallet that has already sent a transaction, because sending a transaction exposes the public key.

Estimates from Chaincode Labs suggest that around 6.9 million BTC, worth around $900 billion, are held in wallets with publicly visible keys, making them prime targets for a future quantum attack.

The Bitcoin community has proposed fixes; BIP360 is an active proposal, but implementation timelines are slow and politically contested. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has publicly criticized Bitcoin’s quantum proposals, which tells you how fractured the industry’s response remains. Ethereum has released a roadmap for the post-quantum Layer 1 upgrade, but it is still a roadmap.

Algorand and Aptos are not waiting for community votes to renovate 15-year-old architecture. Algorand’s consensus mechanism and signature scheme were designed with cryptographic agility, meaning the underlying primitives can be replaced as standards evolve, without rebuilding the network from scratch.

Aptos has adopted the Move programming language and a signature infrastructure that corresponds more clearly to NIST post-quantum standards than older systems do. This is a significant structural advantage, not a marketing claim.

The comparison is important because the quantum threat to Bitcoin includes specific proposals such as freezing Satoshi-era wallets, the first results where public keys are permanently exposed. There is no equivalent governance crisis for chains that have integrated post-quantum considerations into their foundations.
