A former Seattle semi-professional rugby player was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison after being found guilty of orchestrated a fraudulent cryptocurrency extraction program.

Shane Donovan Moore, 37, was found guilty of wire fraud involving more than 40 investors in several American states, which deceived them to contribute more than $ 900,000 under false pretexts.

Prosecutors and abusive financial use

According to a press release from the United States Ministry of Justice, Moore operated a company called Quantum Donovan LLC between January 2021 and October 2022. He would have told investors that their funds would be used to buy cryptocurrency extraction equipment and produce a daily return of 1%.

However, no mining equipment of this type has never been purchased. Instead, Moore used funds invested for personal expenses and to reimburse the first participants in a classic structure of the Ponzi program.

During the sentence to determining the sentence, the American district judge Tana Lin underlined the psychological and emotional assessment on the victims of Moore. Many investors were individuals that Moore met thanks to his rugby ties in Washington, Oregon, Utah, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The deputy prosecutor of the United States, Brian Wynne, noted in court documents that Moore used investors funds to finance personal subsistence costs, including luxury trips, clothing, electronics and apartment deposits.

The fraudulent operation worked using the money of new investors to send returns to the old ones, creating the illusion of a functional mining company. To strengthen the credibility of the program, Moore has sometimes sent cryptocurrencies to certain investors.

According to the prosecutors, prosecutors had to convince them that the mining operation was real. However, none of the funds has ever been allocated to equipment or mining infrastructure.

The Ministry of Justice stressed that Moore’s actions have led to substantial financial losses. While more than $ 900,000 was collected in total, the victims had a combined loss of more than $ 387,000.

The gap derives from the use by Moore from new investments to partially repay the earliest, supporting the deception over a period of 21 months.

Doj and FBI invite caution in the risk of cryptographic fraud

The Federal Investigation Office conducted the investigation into Moore’s activities, the case pursued by assistant prosecutors in the United States Brian Wynne and Casey Conzatti.

The acting American lawyer, Teal, Luthy Miller, noted that Moore has capitalized on the emerging popularity of the cryptocurrency to commit a form of familiar fraud. “He used the novelty of the cryptocurrency to commit secular fraud – a Ponzi program,” said Miller.

Moore’s condemnation reflects a broader thrust of the American authorities to suppress fraudulent investment regimes of cryptocurrencies. According to the Internet Crime Report in 2023 of the FBI, the fraud linked to the crypto has increased in recent years, in particular the scams promising high -efficiency yields thanks to mining or jealous.
