In the category, the vulnerabilities of the code were the main cause of the loss of funds, and about $ 229.67 million was lost due to these, followed by phishing attacks which amounted to $ 47.63 million and private compromises at $ 11.65 million. Price handling and token discharges contributed to around $ 1.05 million and $ 266,000 in total of lost funds.

In terms of the type of platforms targeted by cybercriminals, the protocols DEFI were the hardest affected, undergoing losses of a value of $ 241.29 million, followed by incidents involving social engineering (35.55 million dollars), centralized exchanges (11.17 million dollars), walkers (8.58 million Dollars) and poisoning at the address ($ 3.49 million).

Certik data show that despite the heavy damage, $ 162 million has been recovered by these cryptographic platforms.

The report shows that flash loan attacks experienced a significant drop in May to $ 0.4 million compared to $ 5.9 million in April 2025. Phishing also increased from $ 37.8 million to $ 6.6 million. The exploits, however, were almost equal to the $ 239.9 million in March, but less than $ 51.5 million in April.

The data show that the vulnerabilities of the code remain the lowest link, leading to the majority of May losses.

Crypto hacking remains a persistent threat, with four years in the last decade, seeing individually more than a billion dollars of stolen crypto (2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023). 2024 marks the fifth year to reach this disturbing step, stressing how, as the adoption and prices of the crypto increases, the same goes for the amount that can be stolen.
